Just like we're still screwin with our lineup, and as I said, 4 differents starters today.

Shaun Seibert was also on a pitch count, he's coming off of minor shoulder surgery and this was the first time he pitched outdoors since he dominated the Cape Cod League.

You act like winning this game means you are better.

Its a 3 game series, and our bats are due to show up sometime.

Duke Welker is a higher ranked prospect than Jess Todd, I cant wait for his Razorback Debut!

Texas lost to San Diego, twice.
    Miami lost to Mercer.

Both Top 10, so we're not the only rusty Top 10 team.
Yea I am sure pitch count is the reason you guys went through all those pitchers and not just the fact that they were giving up too many hits and runs. Hogs4Life, you are watching at home. I am watching from your teams dugout. Either Arkansas is seriously overhyped this year, or Tech is seriously underhyped. Your players, coaches, and fans there are all frustrated because they can't hit our all sophomore starting pitching staff. If your bats were going to come alive then it should have been yesterday (don't forget the jokes you made on Jericho's ERA). Your top 5 pitching staff is getting out pitched by sophomores and there is nothing you can say about that.

...you'd have still lost Saturday. You must be a homer (simpson) because you just said "doh!"

I'm looking forward to another great game today.

Hogs4Life you have to give the Dogs credit. Bottom line is that the Dogs are hitting now and the Hogs are not.

Both teams should be shaking off rust. I would think the Hogs would have been a little ahead. Just for the fact that the way it has been weather wise in January. Both teams were indoors a lot and the Hogs facilities allowed them to do more.

This is what makes College Baseball enjoyable. The Diamond Hogs leave Ruston with a series victory and the Bullgogs win the WAC.

Arkansas bats silent in loss at Louisiana Tech

RUSTON, La. — The Louisiana Tech pitching staff stymied the Arkansas’ offense on a chilly Saturday afternoon at J. C. Love Field to even the series at one game each with a 9-2 win in front of 3, 076 fans.

The No. 7 Razorbacks managed just seven hits after getting just five hits in a season-opening 4-2 win on Friday night. Louisiana Tech exploded for nine runs on 11 hits off five UA pitchers.

Junior right-handed pitcher Shaun Seibert took the loss after allowing a two-run first inning. He then settled down to work a solid four innings. He allowed just those two runs, on five hits, walking one and striking out three.

Louisiana Tech starting pitcher and designated hitter Jericho Jones (1-0 ) pitched well over five innings, allowing two runs on four hits. He walked three and fanned six. Reliever Brandon Hudson came on and struck out five in four innings of work, allowing four hits and no runs to earn the save.

Courtney Jones led the Bulldogs’ offensive attack with three hits and four RBI, including a home run and a double.

Casey Coon went 3 for 3 at the plate in his first start as a Razorback with two doubles and two RBI.

The Bulldogs jumped out to an early led when a leadoff, two-strike single to left field by Adam Cobb came around to score on a hit-and-run single by Brandon Hudson. Courtney Jones followed with a two-out double over Jake Dugger’s head in left field. Hudson was called safe at the plate on a bang-bang play to take at 2-0 lead.

Tech added a run in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Brian Rike after a one-out double by Matt Combs and a single by Cobb.

The Hogs’ bats finally came alive in the sixth inning as Sean Jones and Danny Hamblin opened with singles before Jeff Nutt drew a walk to load the bases and chase Tech’s Jones from the game. Coon greeted reliever Brandon Hudson with a two-RBI double to left field.

Hudson dug in from there, striking out the next three Hogs, Brian Walker, Dylan Duren and Tim Smalling with a steady diet of curve balls.

Louisiana Tech got one of those runs back in the bottom half of the sixth inning on a solo home run to left field by Jones.

The Bulldogs then made it 5-2 in the seventh inning off new UA reliever Travis Hill, who hit a batter with one out and then uncorked a wild pitch. After a ground ball to first base moved the runner to third base, Rike delivered his second RBI of the game with a single past the glove of diving first baseman Duren.

The rubber game of the series is scheduled for 1 p. m. today from J. C. Love Field in Ruston, La.

COLLEGE BASEBALL : Joneses double up on Hogs

RUSTON, La. — The Jones boys took care of No. 4 Arkansas on Saturday.

Courtney Jones had three hits and four RBI to lead Louisiana Tech to a 9-2 victory over Arkansas at J. C. Love Field. He had a home run, a two-run double and an RBI single for the Bulldogs, who lost 4-2 on Friday.

Jericho Jones moved from right field to the mound Saturday and held Arkansas scoreless through five innings. He was charged with two runs when Casey Coon hit a tworun double off reliever Brandon Hudson in the sixth.

Arkansas (1-1 ), ranked No 4 by Collegiate Baseball, pulled no closer than 3-2 and the Bulldogs (1-1 ) blew open the game with five runs in the seventh inning. Pinch-hitter Brady Bascle hit a two-run triple to highlight the inning.

Arkansas was in position to overtake Louisiana Tech after Coon’s double down the leftfield line. But the Razorbacks left two runners on when Hudson struck out Brian Walker, Dylan Duren and Tim Smalling to end the inning.

Hudson pitched four scoreless innings for the save.

“We score two runs [in the sixth ] then punch out three times, and that was really disappointing,” Arkansas Coach Dave Van Horn said. “We’re not playing very well, obviously. I don’t know if the guys are pressing or what, but we told them not to get used to this. This isn’t the way we do things around here.”

Jericho Jones earned the victory and Shaun Seibert the loss after giving up two runs in the first inning. Seibert went four innings before James Gilbert took over. Gilbert allowed two runs, including the home run to Courtney Jones that put Louisiana Tech ahead 4-2 in the sixth.

“Courtney Jones is a gamer who did a great job today,” Louisiana Tech Coach Wayne Simoneaux said. “Three of his hits were all with two strikes, and that’s good for a guy who sat out last year and all fall with an injury.”

Arkansas used five different position starters from Friday, including four who made their Razorbacks debut. Coon had two doubles and a single while playing second base. Senior Danny Hamblin started at third base for the first time since his freshman season, when he hurt his shoulder and moved to first base.

“Casey had a good day,” Van Horn said of the junior transfer from Southern Nevada. “He hit the ball on the nose and proved he’s worthy of getting in that lineup every day.”

Coon will start again today, but the rest of Arkansas’ lineup is uncertain.

“I’m going to play the guys who are swinging the bats the best,” Van Horn said. “We need to score some runs and win this series on the road.”

Junior college transfer Duke Welker will pitch for Arkansas against Dylan Mosley of Louisiana Tech in today’s 1 p. m. game. Welker, a 6-7 right-hander, was 7-2 with a 2. 31 ERA last season at Seminole (Okla. ) Junior College. Mosley is a sophomore from Texarkana and the brother of Dustin Mosley, who has pitched in the major leagues.

Arkansas is 18-3 all time against Louisiana Tech. The Razorbacks won 2 of 3 from the Bulldogs last season at Baum Stadium in Fayetteville.

“We’re not jumping around and celebrating right now because our guys know what they’re capable of,” Simoneaux said. “Arkansas is a heck of a team, but we’re going to be real good, too, before the year is over.”

Diamond Hogs Receive Early Wake-Up Call
LOUISIANA TECH STEAMROLLS FLAT ARKANSAS TEAM
This article was published on Saturday, February 3, 2007 9:52 PM CST in Razorback Central
    By Vernon Tarver
    The Morning News
RUSTON, La. -- Brian Walker tried to tell everyone who would listen.

When Arkansas received its highest preseason baseball ranking in school history, Walker -- the Razorbacks' co-captain and junior catcher -- preached again and again how the preseason polls were meaningless until the Diamond Hogs went on the field and backed it up.

Apparently, Louisiana Tech heard what Walker was trying to say.

Despite facing an Arkansas team ranked as high as No. 4 in the nation in one poll, the Bulldogs paid no attention to the Razorbacks' ranking and instead looked like the team more deserving of the high marks from the pollsters in a 9-2 runaway win in front of a crowd of 3,076 at J.C. Love Field.

"We're not that good," Walker said. "We're not. That ranking stuff, like I said before, doesn't mean a thing. It's just a number based on who is coming back and who came in and stuff like that and we're not that good right now.

"But there's just one thing to do and that's get better. So hopefully (today) we'll show up with more intensity and play baseball the way it's meant to be played and play the game better."

The only team playing the game even close to good Saturday was Louisiana Tech (1-1). With the Razorbacks (1-1) struggling for a second day in a row with the bats, the Bulldogs' pitching duo of Jericho Jones and Brandon Hudson feasted on Arkansas hitters, striking out 11 and limiting the UA lineup to eight hits.

The most frustrating point came when the Diamond Hogs still had a chance. Trailing 3-2 in the top of the sixth, Arkansas had runners on second and third base with no one out, only to have Brian Walker, Dylan Duren and Tim Smalling strike out in succession.

"That was just really disappointing," Razorbacks coach Dave Van Horn said. "We're not playing very well, obviously. Guys are pressing or guys are jumping at the baseball or whatever.

"Then we go back to that inning, we jump out and we've already scored two runs and we put two more on and we just need to put one more across to tie. And what do we do? We punch out three times. That was really disappointing, and we told them not to get used to this, because that's not the way it works around here."

After Arkansas failed to capitalize, the Bulldogs opened the floodgates, scoring five runs in the seventh off relief pitchers Travis Hill and Dallas Keuchel to close things out.

"You don't see a lot of jumping and celebrating because our guys know we're capable of being a good team," Bulldogs coach Wade Simoneaux said. "Arkansas is a heck of a good team, but you know what, we're going to be a heck of a good team, too, before the season is over."

For the Razorbacks, Sean Seibert (0-1) took the loss, giving up two earned runs in four innings. But Arkansas' problems were at the plate Saturday.

"There's no excuses," Walker said. "We hit in the cage, we hit in intersquad.

"I've got runners on second and third with nobody out and just don't get it done. I can't expect two freshmen behind me to get it done and it starts with the older players. You know, we're just not playing well."

Arkansas and Louisiana Tech conclude the three-game series at 1 p.m. today.

Arkansas is definitely top 10. We are a top 25 I believe. It is only one series but we did not look bad in the losses.
