    wysinger vs thomas

saw some of the many vs u-high game tonight in the 2a semis that featured tech signees brietta thomas and tarkeisha wysinger. wysinger won the personal battle and the team won as many won 71-62 to move on for a shot at a three-peat. wysinger scored 31 points on 11 of 22 shooting. the kid is simply a scorer. i think she has chance to contribute next year. thomas, however, is a different scorer. she's a good looking athlete who rebounded well at 5-11, but she shot horribly. finished with 18 points on 9 of 22 shooting, including 0 for 7 from 3-point range. not a good night for brietta. she did finish with 13 boards and 9 assists, so she found ways to contribute even though her shot was way off.

on a side note -- calvin's demetria white is going to be a player. she's better than whitney jones. the 5-5 junior is looking for a repeat state title. she's lightning quick and almost finished with a quadruple double. yes, you read that right. 24 points, 13 boards, 13 steals, 9 assists. she was all over the floor. great leader and great player. already has an offer from louisiana tech on the table.

Looking purely at stats, how can you say that one player is simply a scorer on 11 of 22 shooting, and the other one got 9 for 22 shooting and "shot horribly"? It's only a 2 basket difference.

it sounds like she just needs to stay inside the arc. take away the 0-7 from deep, and she was 9-15 or 60%.

hopefully they can find a good post player during the late signing period, even if it is a juco. they only have 2 juniors next year, and sneed turned out to be a good one.

Dowdell might actually be the biggest start that we have had in years, if she continues to develop. She really has the size of a forward and the skills of a guard. Any forward that can step out and hit the three is a HUGE asset.

Also, I am hoping to see more of Levingston next year. That girl can flat out drain the three. She has come a long way this year in learning the defense and learning to pass the ball, when needed.

"Tarkeisha Wysinger began cutting into the lane, hitting her free throws, and wreaking havoc on University's defense" is how the Louisiana Sports Bureau writer covered Wysinger in the Times today. Reminds me of what could have been said about Tasha Crain, Tamicha Jackson, T Spoon, etc. at Tech. Let's hope we'll have that soon again, taking it to the basket or dishing to Dowdell and Sneed, passing back out to Ebony or Stewart for open jumpers.

GO TECHSTERS!!! Now and in the future, and CONGRATULATIONS ON ANOTHER WAC TITLE.

wysinger isn't someone who's going to take a lot of jumpers. she gets to the baskets and scores or gets to the free throw line.

brietta thomas shot a lot of deep balls and missed all seven of her 3-pointers.

I am a little skeptical of white's stats because of the competition level in class c. also, i don't pay much attention to women's basketball but isn't one of the lady techster's problems our lack of height at the guard positions?

It used to be, but Amber and Shan are both decent height at guard. Oh, for a short Tasha Williams again.

We need height, but it is more about the talent level.

Don't the UConn's and Tennessees of WBB usually have 6' + guards? taurasi was 6'1" wasn't she?

They have a mixture. We did great with the TSpoon's, KMR's, TJ's, and Tasha. They were athletic and could drive in or were excellent at assists. It is great when you can get a taller guard in there, but to me, it is all about the talent level. Give me a shorter guard that is athletic over a slower taller guard any day.

Diana T. and Sue Bird were both taller guards. Sue did well with the height on her. Diana was/is just flat out talented. I think she would have been just as good at 5'10".

i've seen her play, watched her just the other night, and i saw whitney play a lot in high school. both of them will have trouble making the transition to college, where you can't just get by on athleticism. but demetria white is every bit as good of a player as whitney jones. both are extraordinarily quick and have great instincts. to me, it's not about stats. it's about who can play the game. and demetria white is a player.

    Re: wysinger vs thomas

we have been smaller than the uconns and tenns for a while.

when we have really talented smaller players, it was ok. we had 5-5 tj, 5-6 stallworth, 5-9 maxxwell, and 6-0 wilson with a 6-3 massey or burras. those teams still made a final 4 and a championship game.

more recently, the talent level wasnt there and we tried to go bigger. our small forwards are now nixon at 6-3 and metoyer at 5-11. mangum and shan are a tall backcourt.

i think it would be great to have a very talented tall team. unfortunatly, it is hard to do. with this class coming in, i think they are going for talent first, size 2nd. that is the best way to do it. maybe they can find a post player during the late period.
