    Baseball Mid - season RPI

With 30 remaining games it's time to get back to winning consistantly and get our RPI climbing at a steady rate. Warren Nolan has us at 161 and Boyd's World has us at 163.Losing 2 out of three to Sac. State (248) really hurt but we need to put that behind us and win every conference series ahead of us.Every team in the WAC has a better RPI than us except for Sac State & NM State. The nex't 60 days will be a dogfight and I think our DAWGS are ready to win the WAC and go on to bigger battles.

We really need to go 16 - 5 over our final WAC games to make some real noise.

Does RPI have any bearing on regional seeding or just a factor in determining who gets an invite? I know there are more factors than just RPI but thats what you hear about the most.

just like in baseketball everything is decided by a selection comittee. the difference is that in baseball teams bid on the chance to host a regional. some schools like FSU always put a monster bid into the NCAA to virtually guarantee hosting a regional. the size of the payout to the NCAA is more important than the RPI, conference, or # of wins. of course those things are factors in determining who gets to host, but the NCAA is in it to make money. that being said, if a team is dreadful, they cannot necessarily buy a home regional (FSU had to travel to Athens last year).

the top 16 seeds will go to the host sites. the top 8 seeds will host a super regional if they win their regional and are determined mainly by RPI. a few other factors go into it but RPI is very influential in ranking nubers 1-8. Seeds 9-16 are influenced by RPI to an extent, but there seems to be a stronger influence on geography. since the winner of the 16 regional travels to the winner of the #1 regional for the supers, there have been times that a #1 seed had to play a team with a top 8 RPI in the supers (#1 RPI FSU hosted #6 RPI Texas in a super regional 1 year...Texas won and went on to Omaha. damn you Huston Street!!!)

geography has a huge influence in determining which regional sites get matched up with each other. geography also plays a huge role in determining which regional teams get sent to. typically FSU would host 1 or 2 other teams from FL, maybe 1 team from nearby (Alabama or Ga) and 1 team from up north. seedings seemed to go according to RPI, but generally it was pretty clear who was 1, and who was 4. 2 and 3 were pretty much interchangable since they play each other on day 1.

so a typical year would have a regional pairing like this:

RPI # 20 FSU hosts a regional (thanks to a monster bid to the NCAA) this site is the #10 regional seed paired with #7 regional seed Auburn for the super regionals
teams in the FSU regional include Atlantic Sun champ Jacksonville RPI # 38, a surpisingly good WV team with an RPI of 30 getting an at large as the big east #2 team. and MEAC champ Bethune Cookman with an RPI of 118.

the regional seeds are FSU #1, JU #2, WV, #3, and BCC #4. obviously you could switch the #2 and #3 seeds and that would change nothing. and it is pretty clear who is #1 and who is #4.

Sorry I had to give that explanation from the FSU perspective. it is just the way I have always seen college baseball. if you want the REALLY bad news it is harder for a school from a non major conference to GET an at large bid in baseball than it is in basketball. (and I throw the Big 10 and Big East into the non major baseball conferences, they have some BAD baseball teams) It is not unusual for the ACC and SEC to have 7-8 teams in the tourney each, the PAC 10 and Big 12 to have 5-6 teams each, and the conference with Long Beach State and Fullerton to have 3-4. that leave just a handful of at large spots left for the other conferences like the WAC. with a current RPI over 160, odds are pretty good that Tech will need to win the WAC tourney to go to a regional (a goal that Tech has the ability to reach). If Tech does get to a regional it will most likely be nearby (somewhere like LSU, Rice, Austin, Arkansas, Miss State, etc...). with a good run late in the season Tech can get its RPI high enough to be a 2 or 3 seed in a regional.

not trying to be pessimistic. just pointing out what I know from following college baseball very closely for 12 seasons
