That we are applying to get a medical red-shirt year out of Courtney Jones so that he can come back to play next year. Apparently, he sat out a year at Grambling due to an injury. Anybody have more information?

In the past yes, but things are looking a bit better over there with AthDept leadership from what I hear. I am sure that this will get taken care of and then will be in the hands of the NCAA.
The biggest thing you have to worry about when applying for a medical redshirt in NCAA is the correct documentation and the wording of those documents. If a spring athlete has surgery in the fall and is allowed to "practice" in the spring (take gound balls, hit off tees, take BP, etc) then the NCAA could read that as they are ok to play. Being able to practice and being able to play are two totally different things. I know that is one of the biggest things when it comes to medical redshirts. It's unfortunate for the athlete when that happens, but there is an appeals process when the redshirt is denied. As long as the documentation is there, then there usually isn't a problem with getting a medical redshirt.
I'm hearing that they are waiting on the word from the NCAA administrator for this decision. Apparently the contact they have to go through with this is some guy named Bryan Beck and he is also a Tech grad. Does anyone know anything else about this guy?
it's just what im hearing
you just posted he was going to be our basketball coach too. and our A.D. and our football coach. and an owner of a restaurant.

I heard he actually played about 1/3 of the season that he is trying to get back. He was hurt, then rehabbed and then came back and played some more games as a DH.Started hurting again, then had surgery before he decided to transfer to Tech. I sure hope he gets another year but wouldn't bet on it. I saw somewhere if a player plays in more than 10% of your teams games its tough to get the med. redshirt. Granted what I'm saying is strickly heresay but I don't think its a given. Would love to have him go through another Fall and play next spring.
Actually he played right at the minimum amount allowed -
He is ONE at bat over the % allowed - and didn't play another inning or have another at bat the rest of the year -
The trick is that Grambling has to do all the paper work, since this occured at Grambling -
From what I'm being told, GSU is being very helpful in this matter and getting all the doctor's documentation and such -
Hopefully this will happen -
