I was having a conversation the other day and we wondered
does anyone think the quarter system plays a negative role in athletics and/or recruiting here at Tech?

I've actually heard that it is a bonus for academic reasons. A basketball player can make his grades during fall quarter and be eligible for most of basketball season instead of waiting until December to get his grades on the semester system.
I have heard the same thing about football players who can enter school in the Spring when they graduate early or transfer from a JUCO.
Others might have a different opinion, but this is what I have heard.
It always seemed like they scheduled a football game during fall to winter break when I was there and had poor attendance because everybody was gone. What's up with that? Other than that, doesn't seem like its a problem.
Good for the players. Bad for the fans.
Ohio State sure doesn't seem to be having any trouble with it.
I hate to pile-on our AD...but he just makes it soooo easy.
We have consistently had bad attendance during the last weekend of football season because of quarter break and Thanksgiving. Yet, WE CONTINUE TO SCHEDULE HOME GAMES THAT WEEK!!! WHY?? Thanksgiving is at the same time every year, and you know in advance when it will be, SCHEDULE AROUND IT.
Every year we have poor attendance during the opening week of deer season and everyone uses that as an excuse. Yet, WE CONTINUE TO SCHEDULE HOME GAMES THAT WEEK!!! WHY?? Deer season starts the same week every year (first of November, I believe) and you know in advance when it will be...SCHEDULE AROUND IT.
Like "they" say, players win games, scheduling wins championships.
The WAC schedules are done by the WAC. not defending anyone, just stating a fact.
If its a conference home game then he isn't at fault...... wow did I actually just say that
Tech did go to the semester system at one point, student's hated it so much they voted to go back to quarters the next year. And no I don't think it hampers athletics anymore than the semester. The thing that hampers is the dorms closing for breaks, I hate to bash housing despite being an ex-employee but I find it ridicoulous that they make students go home unless otherwise approved.
The fact that housing closes down, yes, but they don't have to close down during quarter break. Even if Tech was on the semester schedule if housing closed the dorms during breaks it would affect athletics.
Fewer classes (8hrs vs. 12 hrs) = Good
Fall Quarter ending before season over = Bad (of course most semesters are over before the bowl games, but that hasn't been a concern of late)
Cons of the Quarter:
School starts late causing students to perhaps miss the first home game.
Long Thanksgiving Break during football season, which leads to less students at a home game during the break.
Short Christmas break.
No Spring Break.
Pros of the Quarter:
Good for the Players.
Good for taking classes.
Long Thanksgiving Break.
Long Mardi Gras Break.
Residence halls are open all the time. Students are not made to go home (especially tough if you are an international student !!) As a matter of fact, students use to be charged extra for staying quarter break, but that is no more. Even when that was in effect, students were not charged if we had a home football game during breaks. Housing always tried to promte football games and to adjust regulations to help students attend the games.
You need to let Sam Speed know (Director of Housing - 257-4917) as to who gave you this inaccurate information. I am assuming that you checked this out before posting this??
Galen Rockett
Yes, I worked for housing for 2 1/2 years, and know Sam Speed (in fact he'll probably have my wife, who still works in housing, call me and ask me why am I bashing housing on BB&B).
No one is "forced" to go home, but if you want to stay between quarters you had to tell the RA's to make sure you because the FOB's were turned off over break. The RA's are supposed to go room to room and asked each student but they are lucky to see 1/3rd of the residents and usually don't have time at the end of the quarter to hunt down the rest. And I do remember when there was a game over the quarter housing making accomodations for the band and fans that wanted to come back.
Things may have changed since I last lived in a dorm (2004) and I hate to say anything negative about Housing Dept. I know what a great job everyone over there does and how much time and energy they put in w/ limited resources.
