LOL, you didn't simplify it, you changed it because the rainbow has become a symbol of gay pride. I even remember Hawaii trying to sue the main gay association (don't remember the acronym) for using the rainbow.
Don't be stupid. Jones changed a lot of things about the Hawaii's football program after taking over from Von Appen and a winless season. The locals gave him hell about it for a long time too, accusing him of arrogance in demanding the changes that he did.
Our mascot used to be a magical midget-creature called a menehune in the 60's and 70's. The helmet logo had the menehune running with the football in front of a rainbow.
Think what you will. Times change.
Did they have secret pots of gold too?
Little people, rainbows.....hmmm.
It's called provincialism. It's the same kind of thing I accuse the Techies of all the time. It's those cultural ideas which only have meaning to your local area.
The menehune idea probably had something to do with a David and Goliath mentality. The menehunes were superhuman little guys that did things like build the Hawaiian temples seemingly overnight.
The rainbow was an omen from the gods. It represented power and victory.
See what I mean?
They're magically delicious.

This is the only picture I can find.
He looks so cute doesn't he?
