    no army/navy in BE

    http://www.wvgazette.com/section/Spo...07071039?pt=10

While on the subject of dismissals, you can forget the proposal to forge an Army/Navy football membership with the Big East. (Many WVU fans, I understand, will be happy to read the news.) A source with intimate knowledge, one that asked for anonymity, said Big East officials had extensive conversations with the two service academies concerning the possibility. The idea was to have both play four Big East games a year. WVU officials, among others, thought it a grand idea. The setup would help league schools toward their annual goal of seven home games. It would likewise help the service academies in regard to scheduling Eastern schools and allow them to globetrot the other eight openings.
Navy nibbled at the idea, but Army did not. The source said he expects Big East commissioner Mike Tranghese to fill in league athletic directors in the upcoming week.

Oh yes, and Navy alone will not be the ninth football member.
So Big East fans, get used to an eight-football, 16-basketball setup. At least for the foreseeable future, that’s what you’re looking at.

if ecu is willing to join for football only, i dont see why the BE wont take them. they could beat half the BE teams right off the bat.

the southern conference has 11 teams and im sure they would take ecu for their other sports. they arent world beaters, but ecu never cared much for basketball anyway.

ECU is a football school...plain and simple. They'd JUMP at the chance to play BE football.

This whole idea was laughable. Army voluntarily dropped it's CUSA membership a few years ago because it simply couldn't compete in the non-BCS Div 1A conference. Now, we were supposed to believe that Army (and Navy) could compete in a BCS conference? Somebody was nuts for dreaming this up.

This "Army-Navy" thing was nothing more than a scheme cooked up by the Univ of West Virginia in hopes of 1) cheaply solving the Big East conference's football scheduling problem, and 2) padding the Big East teams W-L record each year with another victory over one of America's premier weaklings.

The Big East will pick up UCF first, because they want that central Florida TV market. UCF brings a big enrollment, a nice football stadium and facilities, and 4 big media markets (Orlando, Tampa/St. Pete, Miami and Jacksonville. Choosing UCF also creates a nice conference "partner" for USF. This is a no brainer.

I think that South Florida will block UCF's joining the Big East. South Florida is only 90 miles from Orlando so they bring the same markets. Also, East Carolina would bring the North Carolina (Charlotte) market that the Big East currently does not have.

I disagree. Orlando is clearly UCF ONLY territory. The entire comunity is behind UCF, and the school has almost endless resources. Furthermore, according to Wikipedia, UCF is the 6th largest university in the nation, with a total enrollment of 46,907. Here's the link:

USF will not try to kill a Big East invitation for UCF. On the contrary, adding UCF will give USF a natural in-state BCS conference rival and create an instate "buzz" for the rivalry. Adding UCF will be good for USF and the Big East. East Carolina doesn't come close to adding the same TV and media market value as UCF, but AFTER UCF is added, I could see ECU getting invited as a football only member.

Another plus for UCF is that Florida is heavily recruited by Big East teams & would give another in-state game to showcase their programs.

I agree with everything that you are saying except that South Florida will support this decision.

It is the same with them as it is with us and ULM or TCU and SMU or even SMU and UNT(since you live in DFW), South Florida doesn't want Central Florida in their conference.

If I was the BE, I would want UCF for all the reasons you list, but USF want's to be the only BE school in Florida.

Unless the vote had to be unanimous, USF probably could not keep UCF out if they did actually want to.
