According to Karl Benson, the GMAC bowl has the option of selecting a WAC team to the GMAC bowl. If they choose to do that, the WAC must put a MAC team in a WAC bowl. I'd love to see us in the GMAC bowl ($50 one way plane ticket from Lousivlle).

I could see this happening if we had a great year, won the WAC and it would be between the GMAC, Boise , New Mexico and Hawaii. If we barely make it into the bowl I don't see GMAC fighting hard for us. They haven't before.
Honestly at this point I would be happy with any bowl. Although I truly believe Dooley will have me expecting much bigger things in the next few years.
Johnny, it has been this way in the past. Actually this deal was available the last time we were bowl eligible, but Benson couldn't pull it off because he didn't have a place to send the MAC team. I think the GMAC had a choice between WAC/MAC a few years ago, but that has since changed. Regardless, Benson still likes to include it as one of the WAC tie-ins and that is only partially true.
I thought the tie in with the GMAC was if LaTech (or the former E-WAC) were bowl elgible and are in 1st or 2nd place in conf, they would be selected for the bowl.
I remember this was a topic when Tech was selected for the Humanitarian Bowl. Benson was trying to find a more regional bowl for the E-WAC teams.
the gmac bowl has always had a deal with the wac, unfortunatly it has never worked. no wac team has played in the bowl.
it seems like a mac team would jump at the chance to play in any bowl, so we should be able to work out a trade.
Found these old article on Benson securing the GMAC/WAC tie in for 2 years back in 2002
"However, before Bulldog fans get too excited, they need to know the entire story on the bowl's two-year agreement with the WAC. Presently, the GMAC Bowl would pit a Conference USA team against either a Mid-American Conference opponent or a WAC opponent, a decision the bowl committee would make come late November or early December.
"We will look for the two best teams to play in this bowl," said Murray Cape, the chairman of the selection committee for the GMAC Bowl. "We will select the best of the 24 teams (14 MAC, 10 WAC) that will best fit in our bowl. We want to keep our fans happy; we want to keep ESPN happy and we want to keep GMAC happy. We are just looking for a great game."
I believe that TCU was in the WAC both years they played when it was still the Mobile Bowl.
The problem the last time Tech was eligible was that the MAC had too many teams eligible and we didn't have a place to trade them to. RC burst my bubble early on by predicting that we had very little to no chance for the GMAC. Things should be a little better now with the changes made for Hawaii Bowl selection and the addition of the New Mexico Bowl. At least we have a little more trade bait.
I think the two year agreement that gng pointed out from back in '02 has expired and the agreement changed after the eastern WAC teams left for CUSA.
Also, when the TCU fans went to the Mobile Bowl about 3/4 of them stayed in New Orleans and Biloxi. The Bowl committee then added a requirement for a guaranteed # of hotel rooms annually in Mobile and Benson balked.
It was originally a WAC / CUSA bowl. When the contract renewed the GMAC bowl wanted the WAC champion or they were going to go to this MAC/WAC vs. CUSA deal. Benson refused to guarantee the WAC champion. Can't blame him, why should Hawaii be forced to go there if they win? MadDawg is right though, a WAC team hasn't been there since TCU.
Benson needs to get this GMAC BOWL BULLCRAP straightened out. Don't tease us with a dangling carrot in front of our face if we can never get a team in there. I guarrantee that if Tech had a chance, this is the bowl to be in and it would be a sellout of mostly Tech fans. This bowl's location is very easy to get to, unlike Boise, New mexico or Hawaii. Tech fans would definitely travel here and who down here in this part of the country wants to see a stupid MAC team over a team from Louisiana Tech( or another WAC team even) I say no-body!!! Kick CUSA out of the Hawaii Bowl if we can't get into the GMAC Bowl. CUSA is a royal pain sometimes and we kiss their butt by putting them in one of our bowls, but they won't help accommodate the WAC in their bowl tie-ins ever. When Tech gets a Big-East invite, or a Big-Twelve invite we can all tell CUSA to go SCREW.
This should be under the Indy thread in general I guess, but my response is one I have posted several times over the last few years. IF LOUISIANA TECH IS BOWL ELIGIBLE THEY SHOULD HAVE A SPOT IN SHREVEPORT(regardless of what conference Tech is in). It is kinda of like the Hawaii deal. Keep the tie-in with either the Big 12 or SEC. Tech versus South Carolina for instance. Would that not be a much better draw than South Carolina versus Baylor.
Right now, I doubt if we can even think about the Indy bowl due to contractual agreements between the SEC and the Big 12/ I was talking about the WAC's so-called allignment with the bowl in Mobile. This would be an easy bowl trip to make for all Tech fans to fill up the stadium and enjoy the area as well. Indy Bowl, I'm all for it , but I don' see it until a new contract is drawn up to include Tech. I would love for Tech to be in any bowl , but these two are the closest and festivities are first class.
