    La Tech's Top 10 Athletes

SI.com has been doing these Top 10 athletes from different schools:
    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/mul...content.1.html
    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/mul...content.1.html
    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/mul...content.1.html
    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/mul...content.1.html
    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/mul...content.1.html

This got me to thinking who would be Tech's Top 10 athletes? I am young so I am sure my list will lean to the more recent guys, so I will rely on some of you veterans for assistance with former decades.

My list in no particular order:
    1. Terry Bradshaw
    2. Karl Malone
    3. Tim Rattay
    4. Troy Edwards
    5. Kim Mulkey
    6. Teresa Witherspoon
    7. Ryan Moats
    8. P.J. Brown
    9. Mike McConathy
    10. Willie Roaf

How would be on your list?

    Okay, I'll enter one.
    Somewhere in your list:
    Fred Dean

In college, he was a man's man when it came to being athletic.
    Louisiana Tech University

Re: La Tech's Top 10 Athletes

I would find a spot for these "athletes" on your list:

Mike Green - All time leading scorer in LA Tech MBB history.
Fred Dean - All world defensive lineman who would literally crack helmets in practice.
Pam Kelly - Very physical 3-time All-American who won Wade Trophy for women's basketball in '82.
Janice Lawrence - Very physical, 3-time All-American, Final Four MVP in '82, Wade Trophy winner '84.

Whats the measure? PJ Brown has had a nice NBA career. Made alot of money. But he was no where near as dominate in college as Paul Millsap, or obviously Mike Green.

While I'm huge Roger Carr fan, statistically he doesn't stack up. Carr doesn't even rank in the Top Ten for "Career receptions" at Tech. However, Carr does rank 5th in total career yards received and is tied for 5th in Career TD's received (with James Jordan).

No baseball players? I don't know enough about the baseball players before I started going to Tech but surely there were some that would rate up there. I'd take Gitmo, PJ, and McConathy off the list and insert Fred Dean and Mike Green atleast. With the last spot add a baseball player.

Re: La Tech's Top 10 Athletes

I guess we need some guidelines. Are we talking only what they did in college, or their overall sports career?

Add Mike Barber and Jackie Moreland. Hopefully MickeyS14 will tell you what Barber accomplished at the conference track meet after playing in the spring game. For you youngsters, Barber could be considered the greatest tight end to ever come out of any college in LA. He played many years for the Oilers and Rams.

It seems like the SI rankings are talking about college only. What did they accomplish during their college careers?

Mike Barber was truly one of the most gifted athletes I have ever seen. In the Texas HS All-Star game, he played QB & MLB--strong, & very, very fast. He could have started at Tech in FB, BB, & Baseball as well as being a premier member of the track team.

Here is what 68 is referring to. We did not allow Mike to train for track during spring training. He spent the entire spring with football, not working with the track team. After the spring game ended on a Saturday afternoon, he accompanied the track team over to Jackson, MS the following Monday for a track meet. He WON the High Jump that day with a jumb of 6'7" (I know that doesn't sound like much today but, back then, it was BIG). He WON the 440 Intermediate Hurdles & ran a leg on two of the relay teams, both of which WON. It was truly a remarkable performance by a guy who was coming out of spring training & his FIRST DAY on the track with his track team.
