Redshirt freshman quarterback Steven Ensminger has decided to leave the Auburn football program and the university.
Auburn, Ala.--Tommy Tuberville announced on Tuesday that backup quarterback Steven Ensminger has decided to transfer to Louisiana Tech.
“Steven Ensminger is transferring as of today,” Tuberville said. “He will enroll in school there (at Louisiana Tech). I think they are on the quarter system. I talked with Steven, and of course his dad, and I have been close to them for a long time and he feels like his opportunity is there with the offense they run and what they have at quarterback will give him the opportunity to possibly play sooner. I tried to talk him out of it. This is his decision, his life.
Ensminger’s father, Steve Ensminger, is the tight ends coach at Auburn. Steven played his sophomore and senior years of high school at West Monroe, La., High School before enrolling at Auburn in the fall of 2006 and redshirting last season.
“His parents, they’ve talked to him and they wished he would stay,” Tuberville noted. “It’s one of those things when a kid wants to make a decision for his future and give him enough rope, so he’s leaving as of today (Tuesday). We hate to see him go, but we wish him the best and he’ll do well.”
Ensminger competed for the backup quarterback position behind Brandon Cox, but was beat out by Blake Field in preseason practices. He also had to compete with freshmen Neil Caudle and Kodi Burns for reps and playing time.
