    Benson's Comment on North Texas

...said North Texas had a "standing invitation" to join the WAC during the halftime interview. Said that the WAC had aways desired to be a 10 team league (basketball?).

I can't blame NT for not taking Benson up on the offer with the uncertainty of what may happen in the future. NT can't afford to get into a conference that my lose its best team in Boise.

I think they are being foolish. They are in effect saying that they don't want or need the extra 500K in revenue that the WAC generates. The Sun Belt is always there if the WAC falls apart.

Too bad...that's a winable/regional game for us. Even though they have been down lately, they have had some pretty good teams in recent years...that we have beaten.

...and yes, that is obviously very foolish on their part.

Not foolish at all. Don't you think NT would ask for assurance from Benson that the WAC is stable and won't be seeing movement? Benson obviously can't make those promises. If NT was hung out to dry, they wouldn't have anywhere to go at that point.

That plus the fact that UNT doesn't really need the extra $500M, as hard as that might seem, as they are reaping large oil and gas profits from recent good production on their campus and surrounding acreage.

If teams from the WAC bolt, they would be replaced. The conference would be weaker, but would still seem to be advantageous over the belt. perhaps you disagree?

I also wondered if the travel is a big deterent, since the need for the money apparently is not there.

    Perhaps I do.

Where would these teams come from? Benson has alread snatched up the dregs of the sunbelch. Which other 1A teams would be available?

Interesting Tyler, I had not read about the North Texas Clampets yet.

It's been documented over and over again that WAC travel in only a tad bit higher than sunbelch travel.

The reason they won't make the move is Benson. They guy can't sell.

If teams in the Wac bolt the only teams that would be available for replacements would be belt schools. NT is down right now, but they can compete in the belt easily and as mentioned before the money difference isn't large enough to sway them. If they join the Wac now, they get crushed in almost every sport night in and night out by almost every school.

LoL Mad, you beat me to it. On travel and location of the other teams. Maybe this weekend was a little too draining.

Not foolish at all. Just common sense. If they move up, it will probably be to CUSA. What is foolish is a team in Louisiana belonging to a western conference. It was ok until SMU/Rice/Tulsa hung us out to dry. If Benson was able to pick up Ark St and Ulala and North Texas that would be great. But the WAC has already made it public that they have no desire to try the EWAC experiment again. If Benson is claiming that North Texas has an open invitation, he must really be getting worried about Boise and the stability of the conference.

UNT needs to bite the bullet.

Fresno/Hawaii are not likely to leave the WAC and Boise leaving wouldnt really hurt basketball.

Boise and Nevada leaving would probably hurt the worst.

    Hello Bulldog Fans,
When North Texas was offered an invitation to the WAC a few years ago, we would have accepted if Arkansas State and ULL would have also been accepted. Otherwise, it would be Big West II for us. Few fans would travel to Denton, few Mean Green fans could make the road games, and the local media wouldn't be able to cover all those west coast start times.

There is nothing wrong with the WAC, it just isn't a good fit for North Texas.

We had hoped to get into CUSA, and from what I understand just lost out to UTEP last expansion round. The Sun Belt has been holding it own the last few years versus CUSA, but being in a conference with teams that could travel easily like Houston, SMU, Tulsa, Utep is just too tempting.
