"black panthers" taht everyone thinks they see. Anyway, i have a stand within a couple hundred yards of where he was and went back this evening. Seems as though my dad forgot to share that little tid'bit of info that he had found out from my cousin this morning. Ole Chou would have hunted somewhere else this evening or come out a LOT EARLIER than he did. Lord, now the rest of the season im gonna here footsteps behind me going in before daylight and coming out after dark.

fyi, my cousin doesnt drink or do drugs :icon_wink:
The thing is, Vette actually did see one. She had no idea what it was. She described the color to me and the size and how it walked and it's tail. We were on the front porch of her parents' house and it walked across the road about 50 yards away. My back was turned so I didn't see it, and it was in a curve so she saw the last half of it. Supposedly, her parents' neighbors saw it one night when they went outside to see what was making all the noise, and another neighbor supposedly got pictures of it on his trail cam. This was about 4 years ago. They haven't heard anything about it since.

Not trying to start anything, but I really think there is no such thing as a "black" panther. I could be wrong. Also, about the lady screaming noise, can't a bobcat make that same noise? I've heard that screaming noise before and am almost certain it was a bobcat.

Well, technically you're right. If you can get close enough to see the coat, it's not actually black. It is dark, spotted, but from a distance it gives the impression of being black. I had two uncles that saw one on a private rice plantaion outside of Abbeville about 40 years ago. While they look black, from what I understand, they aren't actually black. Also, from someone who has seen one that was killed, he said up close, the coat really is ugly. Doesn't look as good as it does from far away.

The bobcat's noise isn't the same. Similar but not really scary. The mountain lion scream makes you want to pee your pants and sounds like something out of a horror flick.

i was thinking about the bobcat comment. It would seem to me that as common as they are today, and i have seen TONS of them over the last 10 years or so, i would have heard the "scream" more often if it was that loud and carried that far. the sound we heard was LOUD

Had a bobcat as a pet when I was a kid. Louder, but not much louder, than a house cat.

When I hunted in the Mississippi delta a guy told me a story about some coon hunters shooting up a tree at some eyeballs one night. A panther fell out of the tree.

Not only have I never seen a panther, I've never had a hunting friend tell me of seeing one. THAT would be something to see!

Never seen a bear either, but they are pretty common to see now days. They are actually a menace in some areas and in need of control. They have made their way across the river (don't know if they were stocked in D'arbonne or not) and I have heard reports from Arkansas down to Columbia on the west side of the river. We actually had one in the neighborhood a while back that the possum cops had to come get.

Yeah, well we're not talking about Alabama. I'm talking about Bernice, LA. :icon_wink: In all seriousness, I think, sometimes, we use a term to describe something because it's a "cover all". I think it's highly possible, that what Vette and my uncles might have seen could have been a jaguar instead. It's not inconceivable that they could migrate this far over. I still don't rule out that there could be black panthers, though. I mean, just because this guy says there aren't doesn't mean that there aren't. I mean, after all, he probably denies the existence of sasquatch.

I'll believe that cougars are in Louisiana when I see one or read in a reliable publication that they are here. Until then, non-believer...especially the black ones. I'm not talking about pictures or poop (scat) samples...I want to see or read about one shot, hit by a car ect and have it validated by a reliable source. No offense to you true believers but I just don't buy it.

    Re: Deer season

The guy who owns the property I hunt on wounded a deer this past weekend and said he tracked it into a creek bottom where some big, round, tracks started following the deer trail as well. He's convinced it's a cougar.

How's this for a hunting story....I was in my deer stand one morning last year, just at daylight and I SWEAR I heard what I believed to be an an elk bugle. Keep in mind that I am in South Bossier Parish, LA. I told the other guys that I hunt with about it and you can only imagine the grief I got... until I found the elk shed on our property. The property next to us is, apparently, a wealthy family owned game preserve and one of the elk had gotten out and onto our property! It eventually turned up on the property way on the other side of ours running with a guy's cattle and was returned to the original owners. All I can say is that elk better be glad he didn't step out in front of me.

I've decided that the answer to "why dont we have any turkeys on our property" is now answered with the cougar running around killing everything in its path. :icon_wink:
