    Re: Troop Surge Is Working

SPINOZA: Assuming that every American war/military action should be undertaken ONLY for the immediate and/or future benefit/protection of any majority of all American citizens......
Would you mind describing with as much detail possible, how ANY of the above listed American OFFENSIVE military operations WERE NECESSARY for any DEFENSE OF AMERICA?

Wars aren’t always fought just to be warring for x reason or y reason. Sometimes it's not always a battle for land, resources, etc. Sometimes a countires security is more than just itself.
Korea and Vietnam were fought because two opposing ideologies were jockeying for position over one another. Grenada (location), Panama (canal), and Kuwait (oil) were mostly fought for US self-interest and economic prowess and power. Somalia was fought to curb the humanitarian crisis that the warlords were creating – take out the warlords, end the crisis. Bosnia/Herzegovina was also done because of humanitarian crisis (genocide, among other things) and as a PR move to improve US relations to that part of Europe.

The invasion of Afghanistan was a reactionary attack and war to what came to state-sanctioned terrorist attacks.

Like I put on another post, I don’t know why we went in nor do I serve up a reason like oil or anything. I think it was a another self-interest move similar to Panama and Kuwait.

Anything else you want to know about those wars, just look it up. They all have their own justifications and reasonings specific to them.

SPINOZA: Assuming that ALL of the above American war/military actions have COST significant treasury/taxpayer dollars...... Can you imagine any avenue along which these same REAL dollars could have been BETTER "paraded" for ANY BEST/HONEST INTEREST OF AMERICA?

Yeah, there are some things I think could be funded more. Health Care, education, law enforcement, border security, national debt, et al.

SPINOZA: Assuming that your BEST OFFENSE rationale is worthy of any serious consideration......
Would you mind describing EVEN ONE HISTORICAL AMERICAN INSTANCE, when any alleged BEST OFFENSE American war has been either COST or BLOOD effective toward ANY seemingly righteous DEFENSIVE goal/agenda?

I say to one extent or another, everything we’ve been involved in, short of Iraq now, has been in one way or another to better America and protect it in some way. There have been positives and negatives, and I will take the negatives right along with the positives because then you know your doing something right, imo.

I don't see how this isn't getting more press. They are basically doing the look away tactic after months of saying that this was THE issue.

BTW - Karl Rove is a political genius. Probably an evil genius, but a genius nonetheless. He predicted that this would happen months ago.

TT, the situation in Iraq is still the same sh*thole that it was a few months ago. The difference now is that Iran has stopped supplying weapons and money to its "folks", for whatever reason they might have. They can rev up the conflict anytime they want.

The second reason is that it appears that the US has turned over several key areas to the locals and has withdrawn therefrom, which means that our continued presence in Iraq only prolongs the current situation.

Nice to see the Australian gov't which supported "W" and sent to troops to Iraq get totally creamed in the recent elections because of its Iraqi policy. The Australians know a stupid foreign policy when they see one.

I think he lost for a lot more reasons than that... and Iraq just ended up being the icing on the cake.

It's only a $20 fine if I recall correctly, and only if you don't have a good explanation.

Howard lost for a lot of reasons, but Iraq really had very little to do with it. Most of it was Rudd is someone different (and Australians hate all politicians -- so none of them last all that long), he is economically quite conservative (the economy is really strong right now) and promised to continue the current economic policies, roll back recent unpopular labor reforms, and probably most significantly, he promised to ratify the Kyoto protocol, which Howard would not. Australians are really sensitive to "environmental issues"; especially so with the record drought that has affected most of the country of late. Plus Howard let out that he plans to retire in the next year or two and the Liberal Party’s Treasurer (the #2 guy, who would almost certainly take over), Peter Costello, is not well liked.

By the way, Rudd did not promise to withdraw all the troops from Iraq, only some 550 combat troops in a “phased withdrawal”. Not really a big deal in the grand scheme of things...

Ron Paul is right. We have a problem in the Middle East because we have our troops there.

As I said before, we have withdrawn from many parts of Iraq which means that our forces are more concentrated now.

No more money for this stupid war! It would be better to spend it on LA Tech's sports programs.

And, I had stated before, the violence is down because Iran has reduced its arms shipments and $$$ funding. Why, I don't know, but they can turn the faucet back on any time they want. Now is a very good time to get out..
