I would by no means say that a Christian band cannot be a good band. Incidently, I would also not say that an anti-objectivist (or pro-socialist/communist) band cannot be a good band; in fact, most of the bands that I consider "great" bands fit that description. But I don't see any of the "Christian" bands listed as "good" bands. P.O.D. in particular is a Rip-Off and is a crappy band. I don't remember what DC talk sounds like, and I don't think I've ever heard Newsboys.
I see your point. I myself though, have high standards in both. While the actually music part of "Christian" music may not be as appealing or good as lots of "secular" music, I still enjoy it because of the lyrics. (let me mention when I refer to Christian music, I am referring to anything other than "Praise and Worship". I consider that a different genre from Christian music.) On the other hand, there are a lot of "secular" artists that make incredible music, but might be lacking as far as quality of lyrics (obviously, purely subjective). Then there are bands, such as Breaking Benjamin, that make incredible music, and have awesome lyrics. While the message may not be Christian, that does not mean I am going to rule it out based on my beliefs. If I did, I would miss out on a lot of great music.

Must admit, I haven't heard a full J.E.W. album. The fact that they have Butch Vig working on production for them probably helps. They sound a little like Coheed and Cambria to me, and that is a band that I do like (although it is far from my favorite).

I like Chevelle. They are kind-of like Diet Tool or Tool Lite.

Switchfoot sux. Don't care for 12 Stones, and Flyleaf is alright for a chick rock band.

This is definitely the point I was making. If lyrics and "message" mean anything to the quality of a band, then atheists can't fully appreciate Christian music. I dislike some bands for the message they give. Cradle of Filth is a great example. Their message damages my opinion of them. The quality of their music would have to be great to overcome that.

I just disagree about the quality of POD. I think they're a good band. I will say that no one has vocalized a good reason for not liking a band yet. Originality has been the only thing mentioned.

Don't compare H&tB to Nirvana, they aren't anything alike. They are good soft rock though. It's really fun to play Hootie songs on the guitar and sing along, but they will never be on Guitar Hero.

I listen to music different than most people. I'm not an iPod music listener. I buy albums and not songs. Put H&tB in your CD player and drive to Baton Rouge and if you like that kind of music, you appreciate the album. That's why Jimmy Eat World is not as popular as they should be. In the 90's, people appreciated a great ALBUM, so they appreciated H&tB. Jimmy Eat World may not have the best songs, but a great stinking album. They just don't fit into the iPod generation of today.
I wouldn't call Hootie soft rock. Sounds more like pop to me. I never liked them. It's all personal taste though so I'm not doggin' ya. To each his own.

Re: Name a crappy band from the 90s (or defend one that others call bad)

I'm not going to list boy bands or obvious bands like that. I'm going to list bands that a lot of people seem to like that I think suck.

Limp Bizkit --No talent waste of space.

Creed- Wannabee Grunge/alternative not a creative bone in their bodies.

    Bush-See Creed.

Hootie- Bubble gum pop and matchbox cars. Also they have the words Hootie and Blowfish in their name.

Goo Goo Dolls- Too Poppy, Also they are called The Goo Goo Dolls

    Matchbox 20 - see GGD

BNL-- I don't like ch-ch-ch-ch chinese chicken. Someone sound the gong, bring out the clown with the big hook and get them out of here.

Kid Rock-- Terrible. No talent. Lyrics that seem like they were written by a boy in junior high going through puberty and making crude jokes. The whole rap/rock thing sucks except RATM.

My wife told me to add Milli Vanilly to the list. Although HogDog will kill me for adding them to this list. He still insists they were totally legit.

Chevelle, though they rock my face off, is not a "Christian" band.

old 12 stones sucks. New 12 stones isn't too bad.

Always been a HUGE pillar fan, same as TFK.

Old switchfoot rocks. New switchfoot = sellout.

To be honest, not a U2 fan by any stretch of the imagination, so I have not listened to enough of their stuff or done enough research on them to know if where they fall.
