Didn’t realize they were “Christian Contemporary” when i first learned of Switchfoot (not would I have guessed it), which, for me, obviously helps. While I can appreciate the gospel roots aspect of certain music, categorization along religious lines adds zero for me and is even more distracting.
With that said, Switchfoot sits in a zone of rock that doesn’t suit my tastes. I can handle some genres of pop, but pop-rock is no bueno.
In addition to the Sturgill album, today was pretty good because it also included new albums from Angel Olsen (some 80s covers - fun, but far from her best work), and Deafheaven’s new Infinite Granite album, which those that like shoegaze and post-rock might enjoy (as suggested by the first song they released, the album dialed their typical black metal elements down to a 1 or 2 and let their scales and atypical chords do the heavy lifting).
