Re: What are you listening to Today?

Yesterday in the evening I listened to quite a bit of Stevie Wonder and a little classic Nas (Illmatic).

Today it's been Jars of Clay's Who We Are Instead ahead of the live event later this week.

    I think it is intentional.

The vibe and style of the song is inspired by Louis Armstrong’s St. James Infirmary.

Wow! Now THAT'S good. Including the vocals. Very touching.I got a totally different vibe listening to that. Of course he's Louis Armstrong.

The song creates a “tension” from feeling like it is falling apart, and that is what is so strikingly compelling. Radiohead was going for this same effect, IMO, and York’s vocals are geared to that same end.

Yeah, but Yorke was bad off key, whereas Armstrong was not.

His live vocal performances are definitely more sloppy than the studio. You might prefer the studio version of the song.

I just like the Jools Holland live version cause you can see the Humphrey Lyttleton (RIP) band perform.

But he does a better job when the vocals are the center of the song, like this rendition of How to Disappear Completely.

One of the few modern songs that uses the Ondes Martenot.

We didn't even shout out to Johnny Nash (I think he got overshadowed by EVH).

    Fantastic.

If you're on the facebooks (I had to have my wife log in since I've managed to avoid it so far) look this up. It was really good.

Very interesting guy. He will always be remembered for shooting a guy in the face back in 2007, and being acquitted of the crime in 2009. After the trial was over, Shaver was quoted as saying, “I am very sorry about the incident,” Shaver said outside the courtroom. “Hopefully things will work out where we become friends enough so that he gives me back my bullet.”

    HAHA! RIP Billy Joe.
