The following year, it went up to 20 teams. Tech appeared for the first time in week 10, tied for 20th. So we were unranked for 19 weeks from 1976-78.
Tech did not drop out of the Top 25 (and rarely out of the Top 10) from 1978 through Week 11 of the 1990-91 season. They were unranked the rest of that season, a total of 7 weeks. They started the 1991-92 season ranked in the first two polls, but then dropped out again for the rest of the year, a total of 16 weeks.
Beginning with the 1992-93 season, Tech appeared in every poll through Week 4 of the 2004-05 season. We then dropped out and did not reappear in the polls until Week 14 of the 2005-06 season. Total weeks unranked: 27 weeks.
We began the 2006-07 season unranked, and have not reappeared in the polls since. Counting the poll that will come out tomorrow, that will make approximately 31 weeks.
So Tech is currently in the midst of the longest unranked streak in school history. To summarize:
2006-07 to present: 31 weeks
Week 5, 2004-05 to Week 13, 2005-06: 27 weeks
First-ever poll to Week 9, 1977-78: 19 weeks
Week 3 through Week 18, 1991-92: 16 weeks
Week 11 through Week 17, 1990-91: 7 weeks
Week 14, 1977-78: 1 week
