    Any takers on McCain?

Perhaps it is time to more thoroughly discuss the merits of this candidate. It is hard to imagine how he won't get the nomination.

    Re: Any takers on McCain?

I almost voted for McCain over Bush in the 2000 primary, but changed my mind the week of the primary. That one vote would not have turned the tide, but I knew a lot of people at the time who were having trouble with the same decision.

Personally, I don't have a big problem with McCain, although a lot of Republicans do. There have been times I have disagreed with him in the last 8 years, but I have also disagreed with GWB quite a few times in the last 8 years. All of these candidates are trying their best to be Ronald Reagan, but none of them are. McCain was the hand-picked successor to Barry Goldwater, who was Ronald Reagan's mentor. McCain was a pretty hard line conservative on a lot of things for a long time, but not quite as hard line as Goldwater.

As I type this he and Romney are neck-and-neck in Florida. If he holds on to win that one, he will be hard to stop. Polls are also showing that he is the only Republican with a chance to beat Hillary or Obama.

I would like a Romney/McCain ticket. I'm supporting Ron Paul until he gets out of it. I like him alot. I wish he would be mayor of my town.

Nothing to discuss. He was a POW. That's about it. May be good entertainment as he becomes more senile? Loves lots of Mexican food and green lawns.

I'll vote for him over any of the dems...and maybe Huckabee, but I'll have to hold my nose to do it. I expect Rudy to endorse McCain before the week is out. McCain/Rudy would be in interesting ticket. It would help McCain carry the conservatives...something he hasn't done yet.

    Re: Any takers on McCain?

I'm pretty happy with McCain except for his position on the war. However, that one issue is so important to me that I don't think I could bring myself to vote for him. Not that it matters, because IMO the democrats will win this election hands down no matter who they put up there.

His views on the war and illegal immigration are currently the most problematic for me. Aside from that, he, like most other GOP candidates, do not really understand the idea of federalism.

True. What about his statement that he was against the tax cuts because there was no corresponding spending cuts?

I agree that spending cuts were and are necessary, but he went all class warfare in his public speeches about it.

True as well. It was at least hard to tell what his real reason for opposing the cuts was. Was it (1) because it would benefit the rich, or (2) because it was fiscally irresponsible without reduced spending?

I'm with ya on illegal immigration as well. He squirms like a worm every time he's asked about he's views on immigration.
