    Moving to Houston

My wife and I have decided that we will be moving to Houston (from Austin) in the next few months, and we have begun to look into areas to live. We will almost certainly be buying, and my question is, what areas would the Houston folks recommend that we look? We're currently looking for something in decent proximity to downtown. Two areas that are standing out in our initial searches are the Heights and Garden Oaks.

I'd really like to hear any thoughts that you all have on this.

    Thanks.

River Oaks is nice and in close proximity to downtown, however, it is mucho expensive.

Other options are Bellaire/West U. and the Rice village area. I haven't lived in Houston in quite awhile, so I don't know if they are still nice places to live.

I thought the job market was great in Austin?

Houston gets a bad rap there are some nice areas. How close do you need to be to the city?

The Woodlands is a great area but a little far out.

Job market in Austin depends on your area of expertise. For my field, job market in Houston is considerably stronger... I should have been a computer scientist.

As far as proximity to the city, we don't really like commutes.

West U is probably a little cheaper than Bellaire and has a great elementary school from what I understand if you have small ones or are planning on having small ones. Yards are small, but that is in any big city. Both are just a few miles from downtown. The Heights is a little older area from what I understand, but you can still find nice pockets in it. Closer to downtown, I believe.

If you have the cash flow, West U and Bellaire are good because resale will not be hard given their school districts. That is where my wife and I hope to live at some point if we can pull it. Right now, we are in the Galleria renting an apt.

All depends on where you are working and how much money you have.

Clear Lake is a wonderful place to live. I lived down there for 3 years before moving to hell...I mean St Louis. Never any crime in the subdivision I lived in, and it was close to NASA so there was a lot of scientists and astronauts in the area (Commander Husband of the Columbia actually lived 3 streets over from me but I didn't find that out till after the accident). It wasn't breaking the bank to live there, and it was about the same distance from Downtown Houston and Galviston.

I like the Clear Lake area. I am no use in this thread though because I have been to Houston countless times but I never really checked out specific neighborhoods just the attractions and entertainment.

I lived in Kingwood and loved it, as far as one can love Houston. Commute is easy to downtown. Look out there before you commit.

I know, Austin is a VERY cool city.(a little too liberal though) I actually like San Antonio as well. My favorite though is the Hill country North of SA and West of Austin. It's beautiful and there is alot to do in all those cool little towns.

If I knew that I could continue to make a living and stay in Austin, I probably would.

I've lived in Kingwood before. Nice place, but I wouldn't call the commute easy to downtown. Plus, while there is plenty to do, most dining options are chains. We're definitely partial to the local eateries, and there are way more of them if you are inside the loop or very close.

Kids aren't a concern. I wish I could hit West U, the eastern part of Bellaire, River Oaks, etc. I don't think those are going to happen. West U or River Oaks would be especially nice because of proximity to work.

From what I know, the Heights area is generally the area north of I-10 and west of I-45, but still inside the loop. I guess there are really several areas all lumped together (Houston Heights, some others that call themselves Heights, Rice Military, etc.). Garden Oaks and Shepherd Park are two other areas we are starting to look into. Both are north of the Heights area, just outside the loop.

Toyota Center is located close to Minute Made Park.

As for Compaq...it was past it's prime and the mega-church it was turned into is rather awesome.

Now, the real question is what are they going to do with the Dome?
