    Computer guys to the rescue

Hey guys, I know nothing about routers and all that junk, but I just got Comcast internet. I only have 1 IP address given to me, so only one computer will work at home. I have been told that if I get a wireless router, I can get both computers to get the Internet. Is this true? I dont want to waste money if not.

    Straight up...

You don't have to get a wireless router if you don't want (but I would if I was you). Any router should do. They're easy enough to set up...even ole dust could figure it out I imagine.

I don't know squat about computers either, but I do have a wireless router that allows more than one user.

Yeah just get a wireless router. Linksys, Rosewill are good. D-Link is ok. Not too fond of anything Netgear makes.

You should get this Linksys, it's cheap..around 60 bucks (from Newegg) and pretty good.

Linksys WRT-54G will serve you just fine. I would not recommend many others.

I put up a wireless router several years ago and my family has had up to 3 laptops working off it at the same time without any problems. I had trouble connecting an old desktop to it wirelessly so cat 5 cable was used. Don't the computers have to be wireless capable, i.e. have some sort of wireless card?

Yes, a desktop needs a wireless card in order to connect to the router wirelessly.

Linksys wireless card. (I've used this, works great and easy to install)

BUT most wireless routers have the "wired" ports as well. If the router is close to the desktop machine, no need to change.

I have to put my 2cents in here. As a nerd, I agree that *I* would rather not have a Netgear or D-Link Router. However... the Netgear WG series has been tested as far more user friendly to people who are not familiar with the technology. Customization and top end performance aren't as applicable to this crowd. Being able to fix it when it doesn't work or apply basic security to it are much more important.

I agree, i was answering his question of "Don't the computers have to be wireless capable, i.e. have some sort of wireless card?" I assume to connect wirelessly.

Thanks for the advice guys, i got the linksys and it was the easiest setup I have ever experienced. I have my wife's work computer hooked in now, in case she has to work from home. I just plugged her's into the router and it hooked her in to have wireless, easy download off of their website.
