Re: Saints going after TE Shockey

The latest on FA visits to New Orleans
    http://blog.nola.com/saintsbeat/2008...n_houston.html

    Interesting notes, including:

"Cornerback Randall Gay, however, is in New Orleans, where he has been meeting with Saints officials throughout the day. He is scheduled to go on to Tampa Bay next, unless the Saints can convince him to do what Reeves did and sign a contract before he leaves town."

"Defensive end Travis LaBoy is still planning to visit the Saints, but his trip has been pushed back to tomorrow morning. He made his first visit to Cleveland on Friday, so the Browns might be trying to keep him in town."

    From USAToday.com: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/footb...-roundup_N.htm

Giants turn down Shockey trade: The Giants turned down a proposal to trade TE Jeremy Shockey to the New Orleans Saints, who did not offer a first-round pick in return. That's according to Ernie Palladino of the Westchester (N.Y.) Journal News, USA TODAY's sister publication. The Giants are insisting on a first-round pick or a second-rounder plus a starting player in return for Shockey, who was replaced by Kevin Boss in the Super Bowl run after a December leg injury.

Although ESPN is reporting that the Saints are making a 2nd push for Shockey.

Chris Mortenson just reported that the Giants probably want a FS/LB + a second rounder. That was in reference to the Saints offering a second only.

    In addition:

    Quote:

It's only been 24 hours since the Philadelphia Eagles signed cornerback Asante Samuel, but they're already hearing from teams interested in trading for the cornerback Samuel replaced in the starting lineup.

A league source tells PFT that several teams are showing preliminary interest in trading for cornerback Lito Sheppard. Those teams include the Texans, Saints, Buccaneers, Browns, Rams and Jets.

A team can never have too many good cornerbacks, and the Eagles could choose to keep Sheppard, especially if they move right cornerback Sheldon Brown to safety. But given how much interest there is in Sheppard, it seems more likely that he'll be shipped elsewhere.

    Also:
    Briggs is in town.
The market for three-time Pro Bowl linebacker Lance Briggs seems to have all but evaporated. Briggs has a big-money contract on the table from the Bears, and it looked late Friday night as if the New Orleans Saints could be the only team left to bid against them.

Shockey is an injury waiting to happen. The guy cannot stay healthy. I would much rather the team get Ben Troupe.

Re: Saints going after TE Shockey

There is no way the Saints should give up a first rounder for Shockey. Our offense isn't even really a problem if Deuce is healthy. Looks like the front office is making some good moves with the signing of Vilma and Gay.

Cool clip of him as a FLA Gator.

Ben Troupe is a player and has good size and speed. I would love it if the saints picked him up.

Does anybody know what our chances are looking like of signing him?
