Isaac Bruce wants #80 in S.F.

Isaac Bruce just signed with the 49ers and wants to wear #80. The number has not been officially retired by the organization, but they have not issued the number since Rice left the 49ers in 2000.

Rice has given his okay, because Steve Largent allowed him to wear #80 in Seattle, but fans are throwing a minor fit about this.

What do you think? Jerry is probably the greatest receiver in NFL history, and I'm not sure why they have not already retired the number, but should this be a big deal?

I say give him 08. Bruce is/was a good WR, but is no where near Rice or Largent for that matter....If he insist on wearing 80, cut him!

If Rice doesn't have a problem with it, let him do it. You're doing it to honor the player, anyway.

I think if the number has not been retired along with Rice giving his OK, there is no problem with it. Afterall, Bruce is likely a hall-of-famer in his own right.

That being said, why the hell has SF not retired Jerry Rice's number?

You got me. Maybe they are waiting for him to officially get into the HoF, but if they can retire the number of Dwight Clark the year after he leaves the team, then they could do the same for Rice. Montana and Ronnie Lott both have their numbers retired from that same era, and both went to other teams before retiring. And, with all due respect, if you can retire jersies for guys like John Brodie, then retiring Jerry Rice's jersey should not even get a second thought.

I agree. Bruce has always been a solid receiver and Rice wouldn't mind. If it was a different Receiver not known and not a future hall of famer, Rice would proally not allow it

Since it's not a retired it and Rice doesn't care, it should be a non-issue.
