    This Sums Up Long's Failure!!!!!

Here are selected portions of an article appearing in today's Pittsburgh Tribune Review regarding tonight's NCAA match-up between Pitt and Baylor. It shows what a national reputation the Lady Techster program once had and really brings home how far we have fallen under Budke and Long.

Baylor next up for Pitt women

    By Kevin Gorman
    TRIBUNE-REVIEW
    Monday, March 24, 2008

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Agnus Berenato has attended every NCAA women's basketball Final Four since its inception in 1982. So, it's no coincidence the Pitt coach remembers watching Baylor coach Kim Mulkey.

Mulkey was an All-American point guard at Louisiana Tech when it played in four Final Fours and won two national championships in the early 1980s. In 15 seasons as an assistant coach at her alma mater, Mulkey also was associated with seven other Final Four teams, including the 1988 national champion and two runners-up.

After taking over at Baylor in 2000, Mulkey needed only five years to lead the Lady Bears to a national title.

Baylor won 20 of its first 21 games -- the only loss came Dec. 22 at Stanford -- and was ranked as high as No. 5 nationally before junior guard Jhasmin Player suffered a season-ending knee injury against Kansas State on Feb. 2.
Since then, the Lady Bears have lost five of their past 10 games and reduced their rotation to seven players. Four of them average double figures, and Player would have been a fifth.

Mulkey noted that the last team to have all five starters score in double digits reached the Final Four, and she was an assistant for that Louisiana Tech team..........................................

In case you're counting that is 3 National Championships, 4 Number 2's, and 11 Fianl Fours and being the only team besides Tennessee to make ALL of the NCAA tourneys until Long took over!!

On a level playing field (recruiting budget), he is also a good coach, like it or not!

So now I'm curious... what would you say if next year we go something like 25-5, win the WAC, make it back to the tourney (sweet 16 or so). Would you then just state that this last year truly was a rebuilding year and that the problem was that there was nothing in the cupboard due to the JUCO influx??

IMO, nobody's going to know what the real problem is for a couple of years.

Budke may have won here, but we all know he wanted to get heck out of Ruston as soon as possible. That's my problem with him. I understand how things work in the coaching world, and that everyone wants to move to a bigger and "better" job. IMO, he didn't give a crap about what happened here in his last few days. This is also the same coach who lost to Rice in the WAC championship by 20 points in his last season, but somehow everyone has forgot about that because by the grace of God we got an invite to the NCAA. This is the same coach who in that year was scared that he would be the coach who broke the streak, and they didn't watch the traditional selection show at the president's house.

I wish Budke the best at Ok State. I hope he is happy there because he for sure wanted to get the heck out of here. That's fine by me because having a coach who doesn't want to be a part of the team is worse than having a player who doesn't want to be part of the team, IMO.
