    Eek Two Different Worlds

This is what Tech does on the Academic side when a new "Coach" is needed. Academics and Athletics are two different worlds folks...

Louisiana Tech University seeks applicants for The Director of the Institute for Micromanufacturing (IfM), a tenured academic appointment with a competitive salary and support as an endowed professor in the College of Engineering and Science. The Director is responsible for developing and achieving the vision for the Institute. The Institute has been conducting leading-edge research and development efforts in micro- and nanosystems since its inception over fifteen years ago. More than 50 faculty and staff from a dozen disciplines are involved in the Institute’s research programs. The Institute supports several interdisciplinary graduate (masters and doctoral) and undergraduate degrees. Louisiana Tech has been ranked by Small Times as one of the national leaders in micro/nano education, research and commercialization.
The IfM is a 40,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art research and development center with a broad range of resources dedicated to micro and nanosystems (focusing on biological, biomedical, environmental, information, and novel nanotechnology applications). IfM laboratories include a class 100 clean room and a wide range of equipment for fabrication, processing, testing, measurement, and modeling and simulation. These resources are integrated fully with the new, adjacent, 50,000 sq. ft. Biomedical Engineering building. The IfM is also connected to LONI, Louisiana’s world-class optical network and high performance computing infrastructure (www.LONI.org). A $25M research park is under development to extend the opportunities for technology commercialization available through Tech’s two Enterprise Centers. Louisiana Tech is located in Ruston, a friendly, historic town of 22,000 that is close-knit with its university neighbor. Ruston is home to parks, lakes, forests, and world-class mountain-biking trails.
Qualifications of the successful candidate include distinguished scholarship and a record of research productivity, significant external research funding, and management of major research projects. The Director will also have strong administrative and communication skills, the ability to work and lead in a multidisciplinary and team-oriented environment, and a demonstrated ability to make effective use of strategic planning, project management, budgeting, and resource allocation. Candidates must have an earned doctorate in an appropriate engineering or science field, and be a US citizen or permanent resident. Review of applications and nominations will continue until a suitable candidate is identified, with a projected start date of September 1, 2008. Louisiana Tech University is an EEO/AA employer. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.

In reality, I think they're pretty similar. If you check the history of the IfM I think you'll find that all but one of its directors have been individuals who were promoted from within. Don't be surprised if this happens again under this "nationwide" search. Our administration continually promotes our micromanufacturing center as being a "national leader" when in essence it's run of the mill. Don't be fooled by eloquent job announcements or other PR.

    Re: Two Different Worlds

One of my professors talked about job listings from colleges. Generally the more detailed they are, the more of a hint that the candidate thay are looking for is already a professor of sorts at the school.

Its not unique to Tech, many institutions around the country do the same thing. Its generally a way of stating that the position was advertised for and a national search was conducted.

In the defense, it really is a great place for research. Tech was ranked 3rd in the world for nanosystems engineering (over 150 schools are now involved with nano tech.). The Biomed building is being used by one of those start-up companies right now, broadcasting AFL2 and some hockey league totally free on the internet. This, and the research that I have friends working on in the building that I hear about is fairly impressive. Tech averages somewhere around 32 inventions a year, with a number of patents as well.

I wasn't knocking the IFM... Far from it... I think what it and the new biomed are going to bring to Tech is unbelievavble.

    Re: Two Different Worlds

That's not a fair comparison. The IfM Director has many more responsibilities and duties than a WBB coach.

    Re: Two Different Worlds

It wasn't about responsibilities.... It was about the effort the university expends to find a director vs. the effort expended finding a coach. You took my post literally.

People don't understand how valuable the patents coming in from biomed, iFM, and even good ol' Nethken are. Its the main thing that the school does better than most.

Yeah, some of us do understand. Well, I should qualify that - I understand the IMPORTANCE of it - I do NOT understand IT.

How much has Tech made off of patents so far?

No idea on a solid figure, but I'll be in the library all day tomorrow. I'll have to see if I can look that up.

Just obtaining the patents raises the level of Tech's prominence in the respective field(s).

    Re: Two Different Worlds

My Dad was the first director of IFM but utlimately left Louisiana due to the state politics (LSU was really pushing for it to be built in Baton Rouge) and I guess more money up North. It was interesting watching him, Dr. Dan and J. Bennett put it together a long time ago...
