If you are correct in what you are advocating, then why haven't we seen the AHC's and the AC's at the successful programs behaving this way. The AHC at LSU has been there for 15 years and served under three different head coaches, and I do not recall him behaving in the manner that you are advocating. Not even after he served as interim head coach and took the Lady Tigers to the final four does he now behave as you advocate under Van Chancellor (sp?). They don't do it at the elite such as TN, Uconn, Baylor, Rutgers, etc. THERE IS AND CAN BE ONLY ONE BOSS ON THE SIDELINES. IT CANNOT BE DONE BY COMMITTEE WHILE THE GAME IS BEING PLAYED.
The game of basketball, unlike football or baseball, moves to fast.
I hope that Spoon can contribute to the success of the Techsters by being a highly successful ASSISTANT COACH. Call her the Associate Head Coach if you like, but unless the other assistants report to her, it means nothing. It is mostly an ego thing. Her contributions will be made coaching at practice, recruiting, off-season conditioning, perhaps monitoring academic performance and cheer leading from the sidelines, but not coaching from the sidelines.
But for her to be successful, she must first help CL be successful, and she must do it his way as long as he is the head coach. I fear that many are expecting more out of Spoon than she will be able to deliver as an assistant (ok, it it makes you feel better--Associate Head Coach). If so, then it isn't fair to her.
Its next year and I can't wait for the season to get underway. I expect the Techsters to win the WAC conference, the WAC tournament and represent themselves and Tech well in the NCAA regardless of how far they may go in the tournament. If they can do this, then they will be successful. Will they ever reach the final four again. It will take a miracle or two for that to occur because the deck is stacked against mid-majors and smaller schools.
I like Champ's optimistic attitude. He constantly recalls the glorious history of the Techsters. That is always good and never bad. However, yesterday is a canceled check, tomorrow is a promissory note, today is the only negotiable currency that we have. The "Cable Guy" is right--Git Er Done!
As long as Chris Long is the Head Coach of the Lady Techsters, we are going to be a mediocre basketball team at best. He is not Head Coach material and he is dragging our program down. Until we get a QUALITY Head Coach to start a serious rebuilding effort of the program, we are stuck in this rut. When we do finally have the aforementioned QUALITY Head Coach, we can finally start building back a little respect in the WAC and remind teams what playiing the Techsters used to be like.
Very few fans will take issue with your assessment of Chris Long's performance as a head coach thus far. Yet he is the head coach and the Techsters deserve our support regardless. There is always hope. Look at the success of the Lady Techster softball team. Tonight they play in the WAC tournament finals. What a difference a year has made for them. Based on last season's performance many may have been calling for Coach Dawson to be fired. Probably not since very few fans follow the girl's softball.
None the less the softball Techsters are where many of us thought the Diamond Dogs would be. Now many are calling for Simeneau's (sp?) hide.
I am inclined to want to believe that before DR and JO offered the job to Chris Long they conferred with Leon Barmore for his assessment of Long. If so, then Leon thought that he had some ability. Let us hope so, and that the ability will surface this season.
I am reminded that it took Kim Mulkey 5 years to reach the pinacle at Baylor. Kurt Budke won maybe one or two conference games at OK State two seasons ago and went further in the NCAA this year than any other Big 12 coach other than Gary Blair I think. A year can make an enormous difference both positively or negatively. Let us hope that for Chris Long and the Techsters it is very positive.
I think we both want to see the Techsters win so let just agree on that point. My personal opion that I will stick by is that CL needs the energy and passion Teresa will bring to rejuvinate the program. If he takes advantage of her leadership skills and gives her a prominent role in practice and on the sidelines then it is win/win for both of them. The old way of doing things the last two years did not work so no need to repeat that. I am proud to have the caliber of person and commitment of Teresa Weatherspoon as a coach of our team. She brings back instant credibility and recognition as one of the most respected women of college basketball.
Sharky - It's taken me awhile but I finally caught on to ya - you ARE Chris Long!!! :icon_wink: And PLEASE don't insult KM or KB by comparing them to CL!! Those 2 REAL HC's took two losing programs & turned them around in their FIRST seasons ( Kim took a 7-20 to 20-9 ) & KB ( 6-22 to 20-11 ). They also got their teams in the NCAA touney in those first seasons. Let's see what CL has done for us, shall we?? His record has gotten progressively worse ( 26-5; 17-13 & now 16-15 ) plus the worst home record in Techster history & besides no NCAA bids using his own recruits ( Champ claims that the 26-5 team was KB's JUCO's - hey; at least they WON!! ), he's "guided" us to an earlier exit every year in the weak-ass WAC tourney!! Oh, yeah! HE'S quite the HC to compare to Kim & Kurt!!
It's not a ONE year drop off but 3 consecutive drops that his legacy will be. Coach Dawson had 2 bad years ( 2005 & 2006 ) then showed some improvement last year before taking the WAC crown this year ( nice going. Ladies!! ). Coach Sim has 2 wiining years before this season's falloff so we can forgive him. At least CL is predictable - he's sucks WORSE EVERY year he's been around!!!! Yes, I know he's the "HC" despite all of this.
Don't worry about the men's program & Coach Rupp getting preferential tratment. This was his first year but with the recruits he has coming in plus transfers on top of his current players having an additional year of learning Coach Rupp's system, he MUST show improvement next season or we'll be grumbling on that Forum as well!

One thing the Techsters do have going in their favor is the loss of April Williams. She was a MAJOR negative to the team on and off the court. Without her nagative attitude in the locker room, maybe the girls can be a little more focused this coming year. But, then again, the will have an ENTIRELY new assistant coaching staff to adjust to. Who knows?
Yes, but will the "positive" loss of her offset the "negative" loss of Jokeira Sneed? Guess we'll see in a few months.
I think the demise of the program can be attributed to coaches at times, I still say more money in the programs bring the best athletes. Visit Baylor or Arkansas, put yourself in a 18 year olds shoes, the glitz and glamor makes a difference. Before you say they look at education first, go talk to most 18 year old athlete and look at the shirts and garb they were from the big time programs. No shirts saying go Education Dept.
