How do we get game film?

Do we send somebody to other games and actually film?
Do we use online tools, ie order other schools' version of TechTV?
Do we trade or buy film?

Or in other words, how do we get film, how much film is it (more than 1 angle, etc) and how much does it cost us to procure?

    I don't think they use film anymore.:icon_wink:

So we tape ourselves and trade with our opponents. Interesting. What if an opponent like Army (for example) decided not to trade?

Do we then trade with some one who's played Army?

This answer might be a little hazy, but I believe there might be a clause in game contracts on exchanging game tapes. And yes, if no tapes are exchanged, then intel is gathered other ways.

The official exchanging game films/tape has been going on for decades.

I wouldn't be surprised if video coordinators didn't record just about every game on TV or the satellites to store away foe possible use in the future.

If we have such comprehensive video coverage, it would be a good idea to make it publicly available. Maybe let us purchase games that we would like to watch.

The only problem I see is that the quality of the "game tapes" may be at a level that people would complain about paying for it. Once we get a production crew here (for the Jumbo Tron) I think it would be a great idea.
*please note that I never watched a home football game on Tech TV so I have no idea of the quality of the video. I just realize that coaches want to see formations and routes and such. While we fans want to see the blood fly from his mouth as he is sandwiched between two of our line backers in slow motion.

Personally I would be happy with whatever the coaches are giving each other. Chances are I watched the game already but I want to be able to go back over it in detail.

This goes back over 20 years and it's the way it was done in basketball. But our GA (Video Coordinator) would work deals with common opponets. For example, if Texas played Lamar and we played Texas Tech we would work out a trade with Texas for their Lamar tape for our Texas Tech tape.

Re: How do we get game film?

How games are filmed in the NCAA and NFL for coaching use.

OK all D-1 teams film with 2 cameras the main one being in a pressbox or somewhere up high on the sideline, this is known as the Wide Side Line. The second camera is in the endzone up high(as possible). The WSL camera basically tries to keep all 22 players in frame except kO or punts. The EZ camera focuses just outside of the TE or Wing if one is close to the LOS. The EZ then follows the the ball somewhat loose.

Usually they use tapes or some type of portable harddrives or both to ensure you have video in case one goes bad. While its different at every school. The home team load their film into whatever system the have such as DV Sport, Pinnicle Webb or whatever. Most have to then send out a tape or DVD of the game to their conference HQ who may or may not make copies for the Lead of Officials.

As for trading with other teams, usually in conference is decided by the conference and then each team sends whatever. AS for OOC basically your Video Coordinator or whoever talks to the other teams and basically makes a deal as to how many games are being sent. Some want your last 11 games, some want last 4 and some want just last game. Now one fuzzy area is that coaches who know other coaches who plays the opposing team will also send you video if requested, its a case of scratch my back and I will scratch yours type deal. One somewhat hard rule some teams have is that they do not share a copy of their bowl game with anyone. Since that game was a month in the planning why share it.

That is the bare basics I hope that gives you some idea of what happens.
