His presentation illustrated the budgets of the most successful athletic programs in the WAC and C-USA. Overwhelming, the most successful programs had the largest operating budgets. The least successful had the smallest budgets.
The most compelling statistic was the operating budget of Memphis Men's Basketball as compared to the rest of CUSA and the WAC. Their operating budget is more than double the largest in the WAC and the rest of CUSA. They played for the national championship this year. Dooley pointed out that people ask "How can a small school like Memphis compete nationally in Men's BB?". His answer is that when you look at their budget they are as big as any school in the country. They made a commitment to invest in their BB program and it has paid off. When it comes to schools, bigger isn't always better. Small schools can be successful if they will invest in their athletic programs. It's a long-term investment that has to be made. The struggling schools that remain focused on the "right now" are the ones that continually fail.
