    jazz exercise option on millsap

for some reason, nothing has been picked up about the following item that moved on the ap wire --

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Jazz exercised the team option on forward Paul Millsap, a former star at Louisiana Tech, and made a qualifying offer to shooting guard C.J. Miles on Saturday.
Millsap has been a surprise contributor to the Jazz since they got him with the 47th pick in the 2006 draft. He has played in all 164 regular-season games and the 29 playoff games Utah has played in the last two seasons, averaging 8.1 points and 5.6 rebounds last season.

I thought this thread was going to be about Jazzercise.
    Jordan Mills on choosing Tech:
“It’s a great experience seeing them play. It was a good atmosphere. The fans stood up the whole game and never sat down. They have a great fan base.”

I think it means they had an option to keep him from becoming a free agent, and the exercised that option. Meaning they are keeping him on the team.

Was this the best thing for Paul though?? I have no doubt it was a good move for the Jazz.

Number one, I wouldn't say he was exactly a "surprise" contributor - to some of us at least.:icon_wink:

Number two, I guess that means he has to wait another year for the big money, yes?

paul originally signed a 2-year deal with a team option for the third year. he got paid 600+k for the first 2 years, with the third deal coming in at nearly 750k.

it means he'll be a free agent next summer commanding a great deal of change. whether or not he'll be restricted or unrestricted, i'm not sure.

but it also means he's off the hornets list of possible free agents. i really hope they make a hard push at maggette, though i'm not sure they can really afford him. not signing a first-round pick, and the $3 million they got from the blazers, should help on that line. having an athletic guy at the 2 will really help, and mo pete would become a great sixth man.

the hornets would also love to bring pj back to be the backup at the 4 and 5 and make a hard push at an nba title.

Thanks for the clarification! Is the ceiling on his salary 750k for next season?

Yes. All rookies sign the same contract. The pay goes up or down depending on where you were selected. There is no negotiations on your first contract after you are drafted. Therefore there are no holdouts.

It would have been better for Paul if they didn't exercise the option because he would be a FA and be able to make a lot more money next season. But he played so well the Jazz weren't going to do this as they want to keep him around. It should be noted tht most 2nd rounders don't even make the team their first year much less stick around to have their option year picked up. Paul has done a very nice job.

actually, that's only true for first-rounders.

since paul was a second-rounder, there was a great deal of negotiations. in fact, when he signed his contract, it came out that paul signed for a guaranteed two years and a team option for the third -- giving up some money up front with the thought that in three years he'd land a big-time deal.

Cool. He had definitely proven his mettle! I think I read where he has played in every single game the last two years.

You know what. I think I made that mistake before and you corrected me. My bad. I always forget that deal only applies for first rounders. Probably because I never pay any attention to the 2nd rounders (except Paul :icon_wink

Chalmers will be the next 2nd rounder to surprise the NBA.
