    The Happening XXVII

    http://www.latech.edu/technews/viewn...&id=1215438956

"Reneau will discuss various plans for the university, such as the upcoming construction of Research Park and the direction of athletics. Dooley will focus on the football season, including the upcoming Aug. 30 home game against Mississippi State and give a glimpse of the exciting plans for a new athletics complex."

Any insight into this? Is this "new" news??

    Re: The Happening XXVII

It would be great if we are finally enclosing the North endzone with this exciting new athletics complex. Looking forward to hearing comments from those who will attend.

Also, can someone take a few pics of the crowd and post them here? Thanks.

    Come on August 30th!

Part of the plan is a new Lady Techster softball complex at the top of the hill across from the intramural center with a multi-sports dressing room facility next door for softball, track, tennis, etc. New intramural fields to replace those taken by the new construction. Stadium Drive would be eliminated by this construction. I'm sure there's more to the plan but that's the part I'm familiar with. The new softball stadium would be completed before Tech hosts the 2010 WAC Tournament.

Most of the area Tech owns north of JAS will be the new research park and the lake. The area is not as big as that marked in blue on the map. Temple Church still owns most of the grassy area on the map while Tech owns much of the wooded area.

    Re: The Happening XXVII

I assume you are talking about this new Lady Techster softball complex being adjacent to (south of) the intramurals center and the new intrumurals fields being near or on the current soccer field.

If this is the case, then removing (vs replacing) Stadium Drive should be reconsidered. The new tennis courts already removed one southeast throughfare to/from Joe Aillet Stadium and removing Stadium Drive would force all traffic in/out the West side of the stadium and congest traffic exponentially.

    Surely I misunderstood your descriptions.

I think the softball field will be where the rugby field is.

Ok. But will there be an exit from Joe Aillet Stadium directly east through a parking lot or something onto Tech Drive or will there be no Stadium Drive replacement?

The plan I was told was Stadium Drive would be closed off at Tech Drive. The softball stadium would basically be in the middle of Stadium Boulevard and the 'old soccer field.' The intramural fields would be just to the west, more or less where the fraternities set up tents on game day. Please keep in mind this was a 'plan' when it was told to me and plans are always subject to change. The important thing is Dooley and the University are taking very bold steps to bring all sports facilities up to par.

I understand the concern about traffic congestion but in order to grow, we have to rethink parking. Real growth of our program will mean everyone can't park at the 'front door' any more. While eliminating Stadium Blvd might make it harder to get out of the JAS parking lot, if we are content on using that lot for the bulk of our game day parking, then we're not thinking as big as our new athletic director is thinking.

Very well stated and a point that should be taken well to heart. In fact, I would like to see the parking lot where Caruthers and Neilson are turned into a R.V. lot especially when they knock those buildings down. I don't know how it would work, but build a bridge over the tracks for those tailgaters to cross for game day. Use the parking around the stadium for VIPers, those that don't tailgate, and there should be no problem at all. The important thing is the finding of land to build gameday parking.

Haven't heard. Another note on parking: Tech owns the wooded area between the TAC and the railroad tracks which may be developed into more parking.

The plan is to add on to the field house in the south endzone which includes "club seating".
