We have so much fine tradition and history at Louisiana Tech. It astounds me when I hear people say we don't.

I love having an actual reason to have the bulldog as a mascot, other than just saying, "well they are cool!"

Odd coincidence, our Bulldog mascot was also from a "funeral" legend:

On November 30 of that year the A&M football team shut out their arch-rivals from the University of Mississippi 11-0 in Jackson, Miss. The campus newspaper, The Reflector, reported: "After the game, filled with that emotion that accompanies every great victory, there was nothing left for the cadets to do but to complete the great victory by showing sympathy for the dead athletic spirit of the University, by having a military funeral parade.

"A coffin was secured, decorated with University colors and a bulldog pup placed on top. It was then placed on the shoulders of a dozen cadets, and the procession started down Capitol Street, preceded by the brass band playing a very pathetic funeral march."

Great story about your mascot. Bulldogs are noble dogs, indeed.

I'm confused.....was it the Ole Miss cadets or State cadets that marched with the coffin? And why did they put a bulldog on it, was that already the mascot?

If it was a great victory why was the athletic spirit of the University dead?

The year was 1905. The MSU cadets had a funeral for the Ole Miss football team.

'Bulldogs' was used interchangeably with 'Aggies' and 'Maroons' for MSU until 1935 when a dog named Ptolemy was christened the 1st 'official' mascot.

He was allowed to roam the campus, and was promptly run over by a truck. His funeral made "Life" magazine.

Well, it was the 1930's.... I can imagine how sleepy of a campus MSU was back then. I'd say nobody thought a thing about letting Ptolemy roam about; Until he got run over, of course.

Every incoming freshman still learns the "Legend of the Bulldog" during summer orientation, along with the ghost of Howard Center (which I saw one late night during orientation practice).

Re: Louisiana Tech -- Bulldogs since 1900

    I remember Freshamn orientation...

Summer 1997. I had a very nice looking blonde as my orientation leader. When we did our walk of the campus, she told us the story of the bulldog, and the legend of which tree he was to have been buried under.

If I remember correctly, there are only 4-5 trees on campus that would be old enough to qualify and nothing has been found under them when digs have been allowed. It does not matter to me if the story is true or not, but I would love to see a Memorial Marker of some type in the Quad under the oldest tree on campus that "marks" the grave of the brave bulldog. Have the eturnal flame that has been talked about housed there and the torch walk, that has been talked about, to the stadium start from there.

809 - You have seen the light in Howard? Please tell the full story of what you have seen.
