I would tend to agree with DW though when he talks about comparing players from different era's. It's really impossible. QB is a little easier though because for most of the other positions the size and speed has improved so much that it makes it impossible for some of the old timers to compare.

Yeah! I am a homer but Bradshaw was a FAR superior athlete to Montana. Montana never threw a ball over 40 yards down the field, never ran over a linebacker and was the product of system that was a gimmick offense for the first few years that he ran it.

Montana clearly was great but Bradshaw won the same number of Super Bowls and was the prototype at Quarterback that has stood now for 38 years.

I would take the big mobile quarterback with a cannon over the smaller moblie quarterback with a good arm any day. In today's terms, would you want Drew Brees or Brett Farve?

    Actually...I'd want Drew!

Good stuff though, Skill. I always love hearing your opinion on things. You know I wasn't around in person back then.

Going with Elway. I always stopped what I was doing to watch the Broncos offense with him under center. The man could do it all.

If you win a Superbowl/NC the 2nd year you run an offense the offense immediately ceases being a gimmick offense. It is now the most copied offense in the history of football and still no one has run it better than Montana. I do agree Bradshaw was a far superior athlete than Montana. I think Montana was a much smarter and more accurate qb than Bradshaw and I think Bradshaw had football smarts.

    Montana > Brees

That was an incredibly weak analogy.

How about would you rather have Tom Brady or Brett Favre? I'll take Brady everytime.

Drew isn't as exciting but he is not going to shoot you in the foot near as often as Favre.

    Is that an old joke?

I know we always have a tendency to discount the guy that was before our time. I am guilty of the same thing. But TECH truly has been blessed with some of the greatest athletes of all time. Guys that changed the way their game has been played at the highest level.

Bradshaw, Dean and Malone all did that and that is why each of them are considered among the greatest ever.

As much as I don't like the school from Baton Rouge they had one of those kind of guys in the early 70's as well. Maravich was twenty years ahead of his time.

Yeah, you have to take the good with the bad with any of them but Drew is never going to break two tackles and throw the ball 70 yards down the field, or 45 on a rope, while scrambling either.

I agree that Montana was better than Brees, but they are the same type of quarterback and same type of athlete, thus the "weak" anaolgy. I personally don't think that Brees is a slouch and he is the closest in style and athleticism of Montana of the current crop of NFL quarterbacks.

Brady is a better athlete than Montana was with a stronger arm so I probably would take him over Farve in comparing their primes but it would be an awfully close call.

With regard to the football "smarts" comparison between Montana and Bradshaw it appears that you have fallen for the left coast media bias. Are you a Democrat?

In the interest of bi-partisanship, I can however agree that Bill Walsh was smarter than Bradshaw since he was the guy that was calling all of little Joe's plays. Dumb ole Terry "had" to call his own... for his entire career. Terry, like Bill Walsh, was smart enough to play to his own strength. Terry's strength just happened to be one of being able to throw it 80 yards down the field. For you history buffs, Bradshaw was the last quarterback to call his own plays with no input from the sidelines.

And for all of you anti-homerites, my true homer pick on the college thread would be Mickey Slaughter. Without coach, the world may never had known of Bradshaw. Slaughter had already proven that a quarterback from little old Louisiana Tech could play with the big boys and he cared enough about our school to come back and coach and develop Bradshaw into a player that was ready enough to be taken as the Number 1 pick.

I tried to keep from being a homer so I voted for Marino. His quick read and release, arm strength and leadership put him in the top 3 in my book. Besides he won a few Fantasy Football titles for me back in the day

Bobby (aka Johnny) Unitas was the best. Don't fool yourselves.
