Now may not be the best time to be wading in......but at least start dipping you toes in the game for your long term goals. There are plenty of mutual funds for newbies that will serve you well.....Dodge and Cox or Vanguard total stock market are good starting points....others on here might have some good ideas as well...
I make $10k a year right now, so I'm not ready for anything with even moderate risk at this point. :icon_wink:

Rus-La, I assume you reside in Ruston and are about to deploy to Iraq. If I am correct, go see Ronnie Walker at First National on Monday morning; tell him what you are trying to do...I guarantee you that they can setup exactly what you need plus you'll have hometown people taking care of it for you.
I'm an asshole! What's your excuse?

I do "reside" in Ruston, but I'm at Ft. Lewis, WA, my duty station. Won't be back in Ruston until probably April or June.......

Rob and Bob Renicker are handling my mutual fund right now. Can't to wrong with 2 TECH guys helping you out. Ronny would be another good choice as well.

They work for Wachovia Securities. Call them at (903) 561-6980

    Thumbs Up Re: financial guru

Well, if ya'll are gonna plug the "TECH guys", you surely can't leave out our own RhinoDawg, who represents a very reputable and trustworthy brokerage firm.

I actually don't know much about Rhino's personal financial acumen, but he operates an OUTSTANDING tailgate location; FOR SURE ! ! !

CDs = certificate of depreciation. there are many other vehicles that will get you better returns. if you are looking for something internet based, try ingdirect.com and their money market account. access to your money at higher than average market rates.

if you're looking at investments, go to fidelity.com and reseaerch their mutual fund offerings. the internet makes it easy to get scammed, but sticking with well known institutions you will be fine.

ING is also a sponsor of F1 racing and the factory Renault team, FWIW.
    Jordan Mills on choosing Tech:
“It’s a great experience seeing them play. It was a good atmosphere. The fans stood up the whole game and never sat down. They have a great fan base.”

A person doesn't have to be a financial guru to understand the basics.

    1. Discipline (my downfall)
    2. Dollar Cost Averaging
    3. Time in the Market. Not Timing.

There are numerous mutual fund families or other vehicles that will guarantee a 10% return over ten years. Find one you are comfortable with and just do it.

If a 25 year old puts $160/mo into a tax deferred vehicle that guarantees 10% they will have over $1million at age 65.

Never understood whey folks associate any term with the word "Federal" to mean safety.:icon_wink:

Name one. The only way they could guarantee a risk-free return is if they can print money. I thought only the federal govt. can legally do that ?? BTW, are you talking about 10% per year, compounded ??

    Re: financial guru

Any of y'all have emails to Ronnie or the other Tech guys mentioned? Don't have much time for phone conversations right now. The next 2 weeks are very, very busy, so I'll be mostly on the computer doing things (school, test, assessments, courses, et al)...

    Thank you all!
