You mean start a chain reaction that will lead to nuclear war? No. Nations of the world put political pressure on them with our peeps leading the way.
Dont disagree with what you all have said.. but this was being discussed today and as they are a part of NATO. Are we obligated to come to their rescue just as if they had invaded Germany or another European country? Or is the treaty broad enough that santions are enough?

Like we came to the rescue of Georgia? Treaties only mean something until someone breaks it. Once that happens, the rules change and treaties no longer exist. Anyone think the US would risk nuclear attack for Latvia? Political and economical force is the only force we would use in this case unless Russia just started killing everyone and invading everything. Even then, I don't think we would jump in head first.
How long and under what terms did it take us to enter WWII, since you mentioned it? Almost all of Europe had surrendered. We, officially, got in because we were attacked.

It wouldn't be "similar to" at all. Neither Latvia nor Lithuania has breakaway, secessionist territories that want to be a part of Russia like South Ossetia and Abkhazia (in Georgia).
Latvia and Lithuania are NATO partners, and NATO should take the lead in any response should such an action ever occur. Georgia is not a NATO partner.
Yes. And don't forget Estonia. Have been to all three countries. Latvia and Lithuania are dumps -- nice people, but definitely former communist countries. Estonia is really nice, though... at least the capital Talinn is. Yeah, Russia invading any of the Baltic countries would be equivalent to their invasion of Poland or the Czech Republic -- it would be the start of WWIII, most likely. If not, then we should just disband NATO because it would further solidify the perception that it is a relic of the Cold War and not a viable 21st century organization.
What does that mean?
