if that is the rule, if a player can step out of bounds, catch a ball that will hit a yard inside the field of play, and get the ball at teh 40, that is one of the most STUPID rules that exist in the book.

That is the rule. The player is considered out of bounds, thus the ball effectively touches out of bounds and is placed at the 40.

The craziest rule ever. He should have just let it go out of bounds in the first place, it may have bounced, but I think it would have gone out. Very dumb rule.
