I have a NIB Glock 30 w/ all the usual stuff that comes with a Glock; it is a 10-shot compact model. It has never been fired.
I bought it because the store was going out of business and had it for sale at $500.00. A quick survey found that it was going at Academy for $60 more, Gander Mountain for $90 more, and my usual cheap priced gun store for $160 more.
I'll sell it for the $540 I have in it. I didn't buy it because I wanted or needed it...I bought it because it was an orphan that needs a good home!

I have a Springfield XD 9mm. It has plenty of knockdown power if you put 2 shots center mass. If you want 1 shot to do it, bump up to a 40, but the bullets are more. It is a larger pistol, so tougher to carry concealed. I don't carry it for protection as much as killing snakes or putting down a deer when we are out hunting or scouting on our property, so the concealment is not an issue. For concealment, a Taurus 9mm is a great buy. This gun will easily fit inside your wastband in a holster. The XD is very easy to learn to use. It has a grip safety on the butt, so no button to push, you just squeeze.
I would pick an auto over a revolver, just because all 16 of my rounds will be out of the gun far more quickly than the 6 out of a revolver.
As far as shotguns go, shoot to kill. I keep mine loaded with 3 1/2 #4 shot Heavy Steel. Can't go wrong with a shell that will bring down a goose at 50 yards.
definitely just use the pistol then. no need for the shotgun unless you are shooting down a hallway in a shotgun style house. At that close you should be able to get the whole clip in his chest. The shotgun is really the best thing for shooing the invader the rest of the way out of the yard. Don't shoot him in the back, but do fire just over his head.
I got a full-size pistol with hopes to carry it and for use in home defense. What I figured out is that it's too big for me to comfortably carry. I wish I had gotten a compact (like what Cartek is selling). It's plenty for home defense and easier to conceal. In fact, if you go with a Glock (probably true of S&W and SA XD), you can use the full-size mags in the compact pistols. So, you put a Glock 21 mag in Cartek's Glock 30 and you've got 13 rounds instead of 10.
