Putin is in bed with Iran and together threatening to defend Assad.
Syria is not an oil producer. They have just enough production to meet their own needs, and occasionally sell some on the open market. The international pipelines through Syria are not significant either. So, it is NOT about oil in Syria. Therefore, what is our interest there?
I think Russia and Iran getting involved in Syria will just create problems for them down the road. Right now Putin has struck a cooperative agreement with Iran, but in the big picture, there is no future for this cooperation. Russia has its own moooslim problems in Chechyna .
* on a side note gays are being rounded up and placed in concentration camps in Chechyna. There they are tortured, and so far, no one has come out of those camps alive. Your friendly neighborhood Islamic religion at work!
Saudi Arabia is supporting the same Syrian rebels we are. The Arabs also despise the Persians, ancient enemies. The Arab world needs to step up and influence the outcome in Syria. If they want Assad out....and they do...then use some of that oil wealth and ramp up support for the rebels, even to the point of committing their own military in the war.
After careful consideration and reflection, I think we (the USA and our western allies) need to step back and stay out of Syria. Except, maybe, continue our support of those fighting ISIS there. We are on the ground in Syria with special forces, working with the SDF. Otherwise, I don't see the strategic value of being involved in Syria. They, the Syrians, have been a staunch enemy of Israel and over the decades, have led the fight against our ally. Back in the 60's and 70's especially it was Syria, with Egypt, that committed the most military assets in the wars with Israel. F_ _ k 'em!
While I am somewhat inclined to call Putin's bluff and dare that SOB to launch attacks against US targets, in the bigger picture leaving Putin in a mess....it'll be Afghanistan all over again for the Ruskies...will have the greater impact on his political clout. The Russian people will not tolerate seeing their guys coming home in body bags from Syria. The Iranians are "in bed" with Putin right now as they have a common goal. But, watch how fast they turn on him when the situation changes.
My take: withdraw our forces. No more cruise missile attacks on Assad's military assets. If Assad wants to murder Syrians, just remember, ultimately they are just filthy mooslims who hate Israel....and us.
Putin wants a naval base in Syria, along with a new airbase that the Russians just constructed for Syria. Makes it much easier for Putin to forward deploy forces in the region to forward project their force, since they don't have many aircraft carriers, and it also is strategically in the Middle East.
This is the reason Putin is so "eat up" with Syria IMHO per Dawg80's question (It's God's doing).

US: Syria is burning bodies to hide proof of mass killings
WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States accused Syria on Monday of executing thousands of imprisoned political opponents and burning their bodies in a crematorium to hide the evidence.
The allegation could test the Trump administration’s willingness to respond to atrocities, other than chemical weapons attacks, that it blames on President Bashar Assad’s government.

ISIS Convoy Retreating Back Into Syria After Being Blocked by U.S. Led Airstrikes
Coalition commander: 'We're going to pursue ISIS wherever we find them'
BY: Natalie Johnson — August 31, 2017 3:00 pm
A convoy of Islamic State fighters began moving back toward the interior of Syria on Thursday after U.S.-led airstrikes hindered the militants from reaching the country’s eastern border with Iraq, according to the commander for the anti-ISIS coalition.
Who hit NKorean-linked Syrian chemical plant?
DEBKAfile’s military sources note that the Masyaf plant lies 70km southeast of the Russian Khmeimim air base in Latakia, which also houses advanced S-400 air defense missiles.
There was no official word on the attack until later Thursday, when the Syrian government charged that a military position near Masyef was struck by Israeli warplanes and missiles and two of its soldiers were killed.
On Aug. 24, the German Algemeiner cited a confidential UN report confirming that two North Korean shipments were intercepted in the past six months on their way to Syria, with reason to believe that their cargo was part of a Korea Mining Developing Trading Corp. (KOMID) contract with Syria. KOMID is Pyongyang’s primary exporter of prohibited chemical, missile engines and conventional arms. It was blacklisted by the UN Security Council in 2009 along with its two representatives in Syria.
The UN report, according to the German newspaper, did not name the two nations which intercepted the North Korean shipments or specify their contents. According to other sources, North Korean engineers or technicians were employed at the Syrian CERS plant, which the UN experts had reported as cooperating with KOMID in previous transfers of prohibited items. It is not known whether they were working on a Syrian project or an outsourced North Korean program.
A major precedent was exposed exactly a decade ago by an earlier Israeli attack, which destroyed a Syrian nuclear plant built by North Korea on Sept. 7, 2007. That plant, hit while still under destruction, was destined to produce plutonium for the nuclear programs of North Korea and Iran.
If it is confirmed that the target of the latest air strike was the Syrian research center at Masyaf, which was the recipient of the North Korean shipments, Israel would automatically be suspected of a repeat operation. However, the United States would also have a strong interest in conducting a strike.
After the US Tomahawk attack on the Syrian Sharyat air base on April 7, punishment for the Assad regime’s use of chemical weapons that killed 90 people in Idlib, US President Donald Trump vowed that never again would Syria be permitted to wage chemical warfare against its citizens. The US has diectly accused the CERS facility of helping to develop the sarin gas used in that attack.
DEBKAfile's analysts suggest that since the confidential UN report strongly indicates that Syria and North Korea have long collaborated in the development of chemical and other prohibited weapons of mass destruction, the Trump administration would have more than one justification for going after the Syrian CERS facility.
