'Should the WAC be a 10-Team League?'

This is the headline question Dan Hinxman asks in his article in the Reno Gazette-Journal today (12-17) and then discusses it with quotes from WAC Commissioner Karl Benson, Nevada football coach Chris Ault, Boise State president Bob Kustra, Fresno State football coach Pat Hill and Nevada basketball coach Mark Fox.

He calls Louisiana Tech, "a more natural fit geographically for C-USA" and a probable "strong candidate" should C-USA lose a team or teams, specifically Memphis, East Carolina and Central Florida, to a rumored expansion of the Big East Conference to 16 teams.

A lack of conference membership changes in recent years, doesn't mean there "isn't ongoing dialogue, mostly behind closed doors," Hinxman writes, and quotes Benson as anticipating changes in the 11 FBS leagues "in the next three to five years." And that would generate a snowball effect, he said. Such thinking is "perpetuated on blogs and chats," Hinxman writes, but neither Benson nor Benson nor Nevada athletic director Cary Groth anticipate this "in the near future."

I want to play SMU, Rice, Tulame, Tulsa, UH, and Southern Miss. I wouldn't mind a swap.

I wonder if UTEP is enjoying CUSA or would be open to considering rejoining the WAC?

Should be able to access their revenue/expense numbers since they've joined and compare them to Fresno for the same period. Those two should be close in attendance revenue. I don't think they would be happy about being a conf. mate to New Mexico St. when/if considering a move back.

An unstable WAC had to influence their decision to leave for CUSA. Is it a more stable conference today?:icon_wink:

They really, really, want to be in a conference with SMU, Rice and Houston. They think being in the WAC cuts them off from their Texas Alumni and Texas recruiting. That is why you won't ever see them back in the WAC. Maybe if the MWC added Houston along with TCU you might see them jump ship if they get an invite. But I doubt one is coming soon. The MWC main goal right now is to become an AQ in the BCS and UTEP isn't going to help them get there. The MWC unlike CUSA is about winning, not TV markets.

Hmm might not be a bad idea. Basically the WAC has treated Tech like a red headed step child. They love to take our money but they certainly do not care about Tech. Also by being in the C USA it does allow a larger Tech following on away games. But our past AD did not make any friends in the C USA. Do not know what the feelings are now that he is gone!

I personally think that the MWC would be more interested in U of H than UTEP because of market. I am not sure that Houston wouldn't want that as well. In a perfect world, the U of H would rather play their old SWC mates (and not exactly SMU and Rice, though), but if offered the spot as a travel partner to TCU and playing BYU, Air Force, Co St, NM, UNLV, etc., they would most likely jump. They thibk they are above the CUSA, believe me.
I am not sure if Rudy Davalos is still the AD at New Mexico, but he spent a bunch of years at Houston and is still very well thought of in these parts. He is most likely retired, though.
