    30 Million in Budget Cuts

    http://www.thenewsstar.com/article/2.../LOUISIANATECH

Ouch $30 million in mid-year budget cuts for Tech, Grambling, and ULM; probably spread out 3 million Grambling, 5 million ULM, and 22-million Tech nothing like rewarding hard work and accomplishments with less money!

Yep, punish the innocent and reward the guilty (so to speak)...

This is just horrible. Any idea where the cuts will be made?

I would have thought Jindal would have been more fair with this. Or is this not his decision?

Looks like Tech will have a $4.67 million budget cut. ULM and Grambling's cut will be slightly less while UL-Lafayette will see a budget cut of $6.83 million.

Gov. Jindal has intervened and the cuts are not that deep. Roughly about half of what is mentioned in that article.

LSU is under a different system. I think the LSU system will have substantial cuts as well. The number I saw for LSU-BR alone was something like $17.8 million, not sure if that number is current though.

Couldn't relief come from freezing some highway expansion projects?

Driving up to Ruston on 167 there are areas where they are working to expand it to 4 lanes all the way. Granted that would be "NICE" but I do not see it as essential compared to the Universities.

I know they say that the only 2 areas that are unprotected are Education and Health but in a crisis like this they've got to question those other commitments.

Tough choices. That 4-laning of 167 is two or three decades late in coming already.

Really? That sucks. I heard that Tech was asked to cut 10%. That is a whole lot of cuts, especially considering we are already underfunded. And with the recession, I guess it is not reasonable to hope that alumni giving would pick up to ease the pain.

I really wish we had better external funding. Just like any endeavor, you really want to have diverse streams of income. We are way too dependent on the state to meet all of our financial needs.

If things keep going the way they are in the middle east it could change real fast. All hinges on the price of oil. (but who doesn't know that)

Two sets of cuts are being discussed here. The just announced 30 million cuts are for the fiscal year beginning in July. ('09 - 2010). The others were announce several months ago for the remainder of '08-'09. Jindal did help out some on those.
