Re: 30 Million in Budget Cuts

If Jindel can not stop the insanity of all the four year schools in the state with this type of a budget crisis, it will never happen.
Reneau and his fine staff should develop a plan to merge NLU into Tech, eliminate their administrative and athletic departments and create a strong North Louisiana based university headquartered in Ruston with campuses in Monroe and S/BC (Barksdale). The elimination of the repetitive tasks, schools, and departments for that one school (and I use that term loosely) could more than make up the shortfalls that both schools would face separately. With the exception of Grambling (historical black college), all of the rest of the North Louisiana schools (including the ones around Alex) should become 2 year feeder schools (Community Colleges) sending students into Tech, U of L, UNO or LSU.For that matter, why do you need LSU-S as a four year school?

Now is the time for drastic changes and unless we stand up and take the lead by providing a very viable solution, someone in BR will make some decisions for us we are not going to like!

He'll be able to do that right after he finishes merging the DNC and RNC into a lean, mean SUPERPARTY!

Seriously, though, if there was even any legitimate talk of putting LSUS under Tech's admin then I might see some hope for something like you propose. But if an idea so painfully obvious and with such well-documented benefits won't even get serious discussion, there is no way even a minor overhaul of the state system is even remotely possible.

Tech absolutely must unilaterally work overtime to increase our endowments and make our presence in S/BC known and viable. To the extent that we rely on the state government for our future we keep ourselves shackled to mediocrity (at best).

The only thing I would want from ULM is their Pharmacy department. They may have some good buisness professors. I don't know. Also if we got rid of their Athletics then we would have calls to play some of the games in Monroe. It would certainly help state funding though. I just don't know if it would be worth it.

That is the point, there is so much there that you would not want but are a redundancy to what we already do 30 miles away!!!! The state needs to cut some programs and what better way then to get rid of operations that do not perform?
In business, the first thing you look at when budget cuts come is the under producing entities. In North Louisiana that would be NLU!!!!

Ouch $30 million in mid-year budget cuts for Tech, Grambling, and ULM; probably spread out 3 million Grambling, 5 million ULM, and 22-million Tech nothing like rewarding hard work and accomplishments with less money!
You are pretty close, $20 million cut for Tech is possible. According to Reneau this could reduce enrollment to around 8,000 students and eliminate many departments.

Reneau has met with several local leaders to discuss his concerns.

Meanwhile, its freaking business as usual in LA. Our neighbors get rewarded for incompetency and we continue to support way too many 4-year schools, many of them LSU-pick a town.

Have I mentioned my concern that by failing to proactively develop private revenue streams and instead keeping us anchored--for worse or for worse--to a failing state education "system" for pretty much all of our funding, our administration has all but ensured that Tech will never realize its budding potential?

    Just checking.

If we'd have hit the endowments hard in the 80s we'd just be sweating how our dividends will weather the financial crisis, perhaps postponing a few expansion plans. Instead we are sweating which established programs might get the boot.

University endowments have dropped by more than 20 percent on average over the last 7 months.

    Eg. Harvard - $37B on 7/1/08 to $22B on 1/1/09

They have certainly dropped but they are more important than ever.

Could the WAC be talked into restructuring the conference basketball schedule next year? We travel to play a conference mate on Friday and Sunday some weekend, and then they play us twice here on some weekend the next season. Would this not save us a few hundred thousand in travel expenses? That way we only go to Hawaii, San Jose, Fresno, etc., every other year. Of course, when we did go out west we'd need to go for a week and a half playing two conference foes twice each.
