Grammar comments that don't warrant a thread

For those who didn't like the other thread getting hijacked.:icon_wink:

    This bugs me...

The (pronounce thuh) and The (pronounced thee). The latter should only be used when it (the) proceeds a word beginning with a vowel. Also, but not a rule, when a person wants to put emphasis on a something. "THEE University of...". This happens too often.

Also, "a" is pronounced the wrong way often.

It's obvious to me that most of the grammar mistakes are probably made by NLU graduates (is that an oxymoron? can you use NLU and graduate in the same sentence? or should you use "ex-inmate"). That is, ones who can't spell "a" or "i" and can't even call 911 because they can't remember the number.

I know how the word "Nguyen" is supposed to be pronounced. I just want to know what idiot decided to spell it that way. And why.

It was probably the French who did it.:icon_wink:

    High school.

Regardless of the correct French spelling (assuming it was the French that screwed it up), I wish the English spelling made more sense.

i agree. there are several other asian names that that are not spelled anything like they sound. doesn't make any sense. if your name is spelled with a different alphabet in your homeland, why not spell it like it sounds in the language of the land you live in now? i can understand some people keeping the traditional spelling of their name when it is traditionally spelled in the roman alphabet, but there's no excuse for it when you have to change alphabets.

Re: Grammar comments that don't warrant a thread

OK, I don't like it when people correct grammar in threads because as long as it isn't so bad that you can't understand what they are saying then who cares? This is supposed to be about sports. I shouldn't have to run spell check if I want express a thought about a middle linebacker.

That being said there are 2 things I see all the time that bug me.

People that don't know the difference between:

    LOSE and LOOSE.

    and

    IDEA AND IDEAL.

Seems pretty basic to me but as often as it gets messed up I often wonder if it is a typo or that some people really don't know how/when to use those words.

OK, I'm done and I promise to keep my grammar comments confined to this thread.

In a related message board peeve:

How many different ways have you seen the word "ridiculous" spelled on this board?

you've probably seen it (and several other multi-syllable words) spelled at least three different ways by me alone.
