Tech, Hawaii Only Two WAC Schools without Student Athletic Fee
An editorial in the Honolulu Star Bulletin today (2-22) calls for Hawaii to access a student fee for athletics instead of the university dropping one or two sports, noting that Louisiana Tech and Hawaii are the only two Western Athletic Conference schools without one.
It says that more than $1 billion goes to athletic departments at 164 of the nation's 215 largest schools, according to a 2004-05 study of athletics budgets by the Indianapolis Star and that in the WAC, Fresno State's athletic department received $355,508 in such fees while Boise State got "nearly $2.4 million."
"According to the analysis, fewer than 10 percent of the athletic departments would operate in the black," the editorial states.
It says that Hawaii "should dip into a source of revenue that is the norm at colleges across the country - student activity fees."

I think it would be nice for the Tech Talk to pick up this discussion. (I thought the students did pay some type of athletic fee. Is it called something else?)
