    mouse acting weird

My USB optical mouse is acting weird. Sometimes when I hilite text it doesn't take. Dragging the bar up and down sometimes sticks. Sometimes when I single click, does a double click. It happens a lot when on line particularly when I hit the back arrow to go back to a different site. Any suggestions?

I was having similar trouble once, so I took mine apart to try to clean it. Can't remember what I screwed up while doing it ??; but I do remember driving out to WalMart in the middle of the night to purchase a new mouse.

That fixed the problem for me.

Try using a cat. They have 9 lives.

I'm afraid the cat wouldn't last long either around the kids' dogs.

If it is wireless, perhaps the batteries are going.

Otherwise, may just need to replace it. Two years isn't a great run, but stranger things have happened than for it to fritz out in that time, especially with frequent use.

I ran C Cleaner, ran a defragger, and did some rapair on the registry. It seems to be doing better. I also have a lot of USB devices on my computer which may be playing a part in the mouse behavior.

Now that you say that, you may need to check and see if multiple devices are running off the same "COM" port.

Right click on "My Computer" and go to "Manage"

In the left hand column will be "Device Manager"; Click it.

Look for "Ports" and click on it to expand it. Look and make sure that 2 different devices don't have the same COM port number.

If it still acts a little funny, go buy the cheapest mouse you can find (or borrow one from another computer/friend/work/etc), use it and see if you're getting the same results.
