    Computer recommendations?

    My requirements are simple:

    at least 2 GB RAM
at least 250 GB hard drive
    Extremely kick-ass sound card

Can be portable or desktop. Stereo output would be excellent but not a requirement. Would like to spend as little as possible, as I will be using the computer primarily as a brain to control sound samples triggered by a high-definition electronic drum via USB port.

Don't know much about what sound cards are best or how to cut corners to avoid getting hardware/software that I don't need for this.

Nowadays, these requirements are pretty much out of date. The cheapest computers you can find will have at least 3 Gb RAM and at least 250Gb Hard drive. As far as the sound card goes, if you are comfortable inside a computer case, I would just go with whatever is offered for onboard sound, then by an aftermarket Sound blaster card and install it yourself. These are not very expensive (<$100)

I'm not sure what this is...i'm a assuming an electronic drum set or drum machine. If you are connecting via USB, I don't think a fancy sound card would matter. On board sound would be just fine.

Chad, you should consider getting an M-audio interface. This is a simple one. Should woork for drums

As far as computers, most basic laptops should be fine. Here's a decent deal, you can add a netbook for $149 too.

I don't have much to offer on this front, but I've been doing a little reading up on mobile processors, and based on what I've seen lately, I'd look for an Intel i5 or i7 if you go the laptop route. DE is right that onboard sound should be fine, but if you have a particular output format you want (e.g., optical or coax digital), you'll want to look for that. I'm not sure what would be available for laptops, but a middle-of-the road PC soundcard should be more than ample should you go the desktop route.

Maybe someone on here dabbles with MIDI and whatnot and can give you better advice. I bought a keyboard with USB capabilities a few years ago but have never gotten around to hooking it up to the computer.
