sucks to be those athletes. Can you move to another school without losing a year if your program is shut down?

The true test to see is if the State Legislature will cut a program or classes in order to save the athletics.

Are other state schools facing a similar problem? Nicholls? ULM? Southeastern?

The Legislature is going to have problems if they save them. If they save the programs, they will have to give the same amount to other Universities that were cut.

This is harsh, but there are too many D1 programs Louisiana. This isn't the worst thing that could happen (unless it was us). :icon_wink: Money either gets restored (and they would have to make that fair to ALL state schools, which means some of ours would be restored) or we lose a D1 program in Louisiana. Sorry, but times are tough. If the Legislature would wise up and cut some of the schools in Louisiana, this wouldn't be a problem.

If I were UNO's president, I'd think that is all the information I need to go ahead and cut the athletic programs. Like I said on the other thread, I don't think athletics is as important to the survival of a school like UNO as it is to a school like Tech.

I also noticed in the article that they had gone down to just 6 sports after Katrina. Was that special dispensation from the NCAA, or is 6 the magic number to remain DI?

Only sport UNO did well in was volleyball this year (4th place), they sucked at everything else.

If UNO sports gets cut, the Sunbelt will lose
Baseball, MBB, WBB, M Tennis, W Tennis, M Golf, M Swimming and Diving, W Swimming and Diving, Volleyball

UNO has a 5-year waiver of NCAA Division I sports sponsorship requirements until the start of the 2010-2011 academic year. It had 15 sports before Katrina, and 14 sports (7 men/7 women or 6 men/8 women) are required for full Division I non-football status. UNO is at 9 sports this year, up from the low of 6.

UNO was clearly using the student athletics fee as per Board of Regents rules. $100 per student per semester was generating a huge portion of the general fund transfer UNO is allowed to make to athletics ($4,932,010 this year). If the fee increase had been approved, around $200 per student per semester would have basically paid the full transfer amount.
