    New Traffic Laws

If true these are nothing more than potential money makers. Not unlike current speeding tickets. Anybody know for sure?

I don't know about that first one. I can't imagine any speeding ticket costing that much or warranting jail time.

As far as moving over for police officers on the side of the road, I lived in Texas for a while and it was a big deal when I was there. You were required to move over a lane when possible or slow down when approaching. I think this is actually a good law. It's dangerous to be on the side of the road and exposed like they are. Not to mention, I think it's the courteous thing to do.

So the school zone law is false.

What about the move over law? I do that out of courtesy now, but is that for sure a law?

I think it should be, if it isn't already.

It is true. I was in court a few months back with some kids in a program that I run and two women were in court on that charge. At that time, the judge didn't even seem to know about that law.

The move over law is true. It doesn't matter who is on the side of the road (fire, police, EMS, or a stranded motorist) if you don't move over, you will get a ticket!

$150? That's a little much. Like Gcc, I do that now and don't need the threat of a $150 fine to force me over. I will say that there are times when you can't move over. I guess you are just supposed to come to a complete stop in the right hand lane while waiting on left lane traffic to clear so you can move over.

School zone speeding email is false

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Louisiana State Police was flooded with phone calls this week about an email being widely circulated which warns of an increased fine for speeding in school zones.
Sergeant Markus Smith says the email, which claims the fine for speeding in a school zone will increase to $1,200, is inaccurate.

Smith says there are laws in Louisiana that prohibit excessive fines being put in place for specific situations, like speeding in a school zone.

In East Baton Rouge Parish, for example, the fine for speeding in a school zone (11 miles over posted speed limit) is $134.25.

If you can't move over you are suppose to slow down to a "reasonable speed" per the article I read in the Shreveport Times. The law has come about because of emergency responders and pedestrians getting killed from people rubber-necking or just not paying attention. About a year ago, a guy was killed in Lincoln Parish on interstate trying to fill his car up with gas. A tow truck driver was killed on I-49 last week trying to load an 18 wheeler up. Another 18 wheeler plowed into the back of the one on the shoulder and it pinned the tow truck operator on the guard rail, I believe.

My department always shuts down at least one lane of traffic on interstate when fighting a fire or working a car wreck. This is for our safety. We have nearly been run over or other wrecks have happened because people aren't paying attention. I think the fine should be more. I don't think $150 will teach these people a lesson.

Next on the agenda: Our distinguished legislators are going to vote on when and where we can take a dump and the type toilet paper we use.

    Stay tuned....

Reasonable speed? Going 70 then see the lights or whatever after you top a hill. Quick check in the rearview and you CAN NOT move over. Slam on the brakes and somebody runs up your butt. This is very common. I understand about safety and do all I can, but if I get fined when I can't help it, $150 is WAAAAY too much. I guess we should all just ride in the left lane no matter how fast we go. Then this bunch of money suckers will pass a law allowing a fine for that too.

BTW, I remember the guy near Choudrant. This law wouldn't have helped that situation based on the way it was described in the paper.
