The Obama administration has decided not to seek legislation to establish a new system of preventive detention to hold terrorism suspects and will instead rely on a 2001 congressional resolution authorizing military force against al-Qaeda and the Taliban to continue to detain people indefinitely and without charge, according to administration officials.
    preventative detention is preventative detention.

If they werent going to get rid of it all together with an actual fair trial system, I could care less what BS justification they use.

we're pretty pissed off they were looking for an alternate definition of "indefinite detention" in the first place. Like I said, if theyre going to do it, theyre not going to be able to just change the name to make the left like it.

Dred Scott Redux: Obama and the Supremes Stand Up for Slavery
    Friday, 18 December 2009 14:18

    http://chris-floyd.com/component/con...r-slavery.html

While we were all out doing our Christmas shopping, the highest court in the land quietly put the kibosh on a few more of the remaining shards of human liberty.

It happened earlier this week, in a discreet ruling that attracted almost no notice and took little time.

After hearing passionate arguments from the Obama Administration, the Supreme Court acquiesced to the president's fervent request and, in a one-line ruling, let stand a lower court decision that declared torture an ordinary, expected consequence of military detention, while introducing a shocking new precedent for all future courts to follow: anyone who is arbitrarily declared a "suspected enemy combatant" by the president or his designated minions is no longer a "person." They will simply cease to exist as a legal entity. They will have no inherent rights, no human rights, no legal standing whatsoever -- save whatever modicum of process the government arbitrarily deigns to grant them from time to time, with its ever-shifting tribunals and show trials.

Again, let's be absolutely clear: Barack Obama has taken the freely chosen, public, formal stand -- in court -- that there is nothing wrong with any of these activities. Nothing to answer for, nothing meriting punishment or even civil penalties. What's more, in championing the lower court ruling, Barack Obama is now on record as believing -- insisting -- that torture is an ordinary, "foreseeable consequence" of military detention of all those who are arbitrarily declared "suspected enemy combatants."

don't really have a problem with that. Just needs to address WHO can be labeled as that. Until then, it's questionable.

Wouldn't this make KSM's trial null & void??? along with all detainees trials?

Just answer one question.......What has Obama done in his 1st year in office that is worthy of our support??? Please give details.

Plan to Move Guantánamo Detainees Faces New Delay

    http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/23/us...o.html?_r=2&hp

Rebuffed this month by skeptical lawmakers when it sought finances to buy a prison in rural Illinois, the Obama administration is struggling to come up with the money to replace the Guantánamo Bay prison.

As a result, officials now believe that they are unlikely to close the prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, and transfer its population of terrorism suspects until 2011 at the earliest — a far slower timeline for achieving one of President Obama’s signature national security policies than they had previously hinted.

Well, no duh. They're just now catching on? One disaster after another this has been. Starting with the notion of closing it in the first place.

Lobbyists on pace for record year

    http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1209/30882.html

Main Street has had a tough year, losing jobs and seeing little evidence of the economic revival that experts say has already begun.

But K Street is raking it in.

Washington’s influence industry is on track to shatter last year’s record $3.3 billion spent to lobby Congress and the rest of the federal government — and that’s with a down economy and about 1,500 fewer registered lobbyists in town, according to data collected by the Center for Responsive Politics.

Many lobbying firms have escaped the worst of the corporate belt-tightening, thanks, in large part, to the ambitious agenda set out by President Barack Obama — who, ironically, came to Washington with a pledge to break what he considered the undue influence of special-interest lobbyists.

Obama: Expectations for Middle East peace too high

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100121/...ma_middle_east

President Barack Obama says his administration overestimated its ability to persuade the Israelis and Palestinians to resume meaningful peace talks.

Obama says both parties have been unwilling to make the bold gestures needed to move the process forward. If the U.S. had anticipated that earlier, Obama says he might not have raised his expectations so high.
