What if N.Korea fired a long range ballistic missle towards Hawaii, and it somehow made it through our missle defenses and struck a building. No warhead or anything like that, but damaged a buildling with minimal loss of life. What do you think our administrations response would be? or should be? What do you think the UN would do?


I think a verbal outrage by the administration would be given. Nothing militarily as far as a response. I think the UN would put North Korea on "double secret probation" and do nothing. North Korea would continue to beat its chest in defiance of the rest of the world.. status quo.

Agree. We'd probably bomb their missile launching capabilities. Much like when Iraq was shooting at our aircraft after Gulf Storm.

This would probably escalate because NK is driven by a madman. Before hitting them, we'd probably mobilize the troops in SK to preven them from being nuked.

Seriously, I think the response would be very measured. I doubt that military action would be taken since anything we do in that regard could set off an invasion of the south. I think it goes to the UN, a harshly worded resolution is passed, and that is that. Maybe throw in a few sanctions for show. Kim is mentally unbalanced, but his prime focus is living as long as possible and staying in power. However, his mental state is a big plus for him since it greatly complicates our contingency planning and diplomacy.

One other thought, if this happened, it might cause so much consternation amongst his own leadership, that they decide to do something about it themselves. They have just as much to lose in a war as Kim. I would not be surprised to see the Dear Leader have another "stroke" or meet with an untimely "accident" very soon after. Whether his youngest son takes over is anybody's guess. Look for the Chinese to possibly play a very discrete part in this as well... :icon_wink:

Remember, this depends a great deal who is residing in the White House at the time. Also, if it gets through our BMD shield, there is going to be a lot of handwringing over that as well and that will take center stage.

Jimmy Carter with Iran.
Bill Clinton with Al Qaeda.
O. Hussein Obama with North Korea
Then I’m pretty sure Jane Fonda would travel to Pyongyang and kiss communist babies.
