Support Coach Byrd on Facebook group

Vette was telling me of this group that has started on Facebook to support a coach from Huntington High, I think. His name is Coach Byrd. Apparently, he is facing the possibility of losing his coaching and teaching job because from what I understand (couldn't find the article) he was made to leave Superior because he was too drunk but he went back inside and the cops arrived to escort him out and he resisted arrest. Apparently there are alot of people that don't feel he should lose his job over this because it has nothing to do with his teaching and coaching. First, can someone supply me a link to a story that has what happened so I can decide which side of the fence I'm on.

Initially, I'm inclined to believe that this should determine whether he is in a position of authority and leadership. If he did indeed resist arrest and trespass after being told to leave the restaraunt, I think it sets a bad example for those he is supposed to be teaching how to follow the rules. What are others thoughts on the subject. If possible, think with an open mind and not because you personally know the guy. How would you feel if it was some Joe Highschool Coach from Iowa?

Thanks for the links. I didn't realize he played for Tech. He should definitely be given a second chance.:icon_wink:

He's not tenured so they can fire him for any reason they want. It appears to me that Superior Grill tried to alleviate the problem as peacefully as possible and even called him a cab. I've been to Superior quite often, it's gets pretty rowdy in there during happy hour but I've never seen anyone get escorted out.

This is a judgement call, and it would not bother me what the school board wanted to do. Since it is his (assumed) first incident, I might would just give him a warning since it was labeled a misdemeanor. He would be on a tight leash after that, though. However, if the school board wants to can him, strip him of his coaching duties (still teaching), or fail to do anything, it would not be that big of a deal to me, either way.

I teach, and while I am not sure what I would do as an administrator in this case without actually talking to all involved, I do know that here in Frisco he would be fired ( what we like to call in FISD a non-renewal of your contract).

Texas usually has an abundance of teachers given the pay grade and good conditions. I dont think Louisiana can have the luxury of canning people as much, especially when it comes to good, qualified teachers (assuming he is).

He was arrested after a brief struggle. Byrd was "taken to the ground" during the struggle and sustained bruises and a laceration above his eye, police spokesman Sgt. Kevin Goodwin said.

Shreveport fire medics responded; but Byrd, who stands 6 feet, 6 inches tall and weighs about 280 pounds, was uncooperative and refused treatment at the scene, Goodwin said.

The cop is Josh in the stories.

"Little" Jerry, as we called him running wild in the Tech pressbox back in the 1970s, has apparently violated the "Do Right" Rule that comes with the job.

I wish him well and hope things work out for him.

I'm afraid Jerry is going to have to take his lumps on this one.

I was at superior that night and saw jerry drinking heavily by himself. I'm not making excuses for him, but from everything I've heard about him from people who know him well, this is out of character. I was just wondering if some circumstance drove him to act like this. Again, I'm not making excuses for him, because everything in the article is true, they tried everything to get him to leave peacefully.

From all accounts...this is very out of character, but Bulldawg or not, it sounds like he needs help more than he needs to continue being a coach/teacher.

Let him get the help he needs and return when it is appropriate, whether that is this year, next, etc
