    Pro Stars with Guns

Was the sentence handed down to Plax to heavy? Light?

I would argue the sentence was just right if not a little too light. My reasons:

A celeb in NY should know how things are going to be when they go out in public. That is why they offer grocery delivery services.

Shouldn't he be in a night club with other celebs in a part of town he knows is safe or watched by the police?

Doesn't he know that Joe Blow from Scranton would have gotten a much heavier sentence just because he is a nobody and he should thank his lucky stars that he could pay for good lawyers who probably got him less time than he deserved?

    Just my 2 cents...........

I totally disagree about one of your statements. Joe Blow would NOT have gone to jail for 2 years. No way. Plaxico should not have had the gun. That's obvious. But 2 years is a long time to spend in jail for shooting yourself in the leg.

Totally agree....his 'celebrity' got him the 2 years.....Joe Blow would likely be walking, or at least limping

I thought the 2 years was harsh, but they wante dto make an example of him and it is liberal NY with their stupid gun laws. I thought maybe a few months just to teach him a lesson, but 2 years is woodsheddin' his ass (both literally and figuratively).

You knew it was going to happen, too. After Bloomberg started running his mouth about how he should be severly punished. What a load. Bloomberg, shut your mouth and know your role. It was unethical for him to comment, since he has no say on his sentence in theory. He was using his clout as mayor and big daddy warbucks to pressure the judicial system early on. I thought that was crap because you could tell from his tone that he wanted Plaxico punished extra for being a celebrity.

Two years is ridiculous. Why burden the taxpayers with that? Is he an idiot? Clearly. Should he be punished? Yes. Sitting him behind bars for two years doesn't serve the people's interest. Make him clean up the streets. Give speeches to high schoolers about staying in school (and obeying the law).

Much like the celebrities who get caught for DUI's though, I don't have much sympathy. Hire a driver if you're going to go drinking, hire a bodyguard if you feel the need for protection (and can't legally protect yourself). The two years he's just lost at his salary will pay for an awful lot of bodyguard.

Carrying a concealed weapon without a permit? What's the typical first offense punishment for that alone? Also, whether accidental or not, he did discharge a weapon in public.

    What's the norm?

I would have given him 6 months in jail and 10 years of probation and never allowed him to own a gun again. That sentence was ridiculous but at the end of the day he is an idiot and that's what happens to idiots sometimes. A loaded gun, with the safety off, in the elastic of your sweatpants, at a nightclub???????? What a moron.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but...

FWIW, it appears he wasn't legally in possession of that firearm since NY has no concealed carry permits. Stripping him of his right to own a gun would likely do little to prevent him from owning a gun.

It's more for humiliation purposes. Like when you tell a kid he can't have a toy. Plus if he is pulled over and found with it while violating a judges orders he will get much more than a slap on the wrist. Since he isn't mature enough to realize a gun isn't a toy (my kids understand this yet this grown man doesn't? ) then I would take his toy away from him.

I didn't mean to make it sound like I was disagreeing. I just meant to say he's likely to do it anyway.

I think the concealed weapons law that Plex was charged with was either Bloomberg's or was strongly pushed by Bloomberg so he had to stand behind the law.

The sentence should be 6 months tops.

You agree because you don't know the gun laws in NY. They have the toughest gun laws of any of the 50 states, and normally you have to serve a mandatory sentence of at least 3 1/2 years for what he did. That's why I have no sympathy for his ignorant ass. They are all told by the NFL and their teams the consequences for getting in those kinds of situations and what the laws are. He knew but he had to "keep it real" and show everybody how "hard" he was by carrying a gun in case he had to "pop a cap in somebodys ass" for "disrespecting" him. Well now he is going to get a real opportunity to show everybody just how tough he is by serving 2 years in the state penitentiary.

Is that the average prison sentence for carrying a gun in NY and discharging a firearm in public?
