well I'd generally agree, but the Fleur de Lis was made an official symbol of Louisiana by Bobby Jindal. Louisiana Tech represents the whole state, the school isn't a directional school; It represents the whole state both North and South Louisiana. Thinking about it this way, there shouldn't be any disdain toward having a Tech Fleur de Lis.

More precise. I care very little about X, but it's possible that under the optimal circumstances, I could care less.

Engineers (for example) care about the details, and tend to be wary of absolute statements (that aren't absolutely accurate).

On the other hand, it could be a malapropism. I'd suggest letting context guide you in whether to be peeved or not. If you see a slide rule, then the speaker is probably being pedantic and hoping you'll call him on it so he can argue with you. If the speaker is wearing an ugly purple shirt with a big eyeball on it, it's likely that it's a mistake, but you'll probably be wasting your time trying to correct them. If it is someone from the call center, cut them some slack (they're working in a second language for goodness sakes). If it's a grade school kid, gently correct. If it's a teenager, tell them to pull their pants up. If it's your boss, smile and nod.

Sometimes I save less common words for my haiku, but not always. Oddly enough, those particular examples are words I'm fairly familar with.

As for the slide rule, I'm actually a little too young for that reference myself. But I bet even the current generation of engineering students know what they are from hearing professors reference them all the time.

My peeve every day is any person who attended Tech claiming lsu as "their team", but today it is a person who graduated Tech, kids went to Tech, works for Tech, but lsu is their favorite team. Sickening!
